Default 3-pointer with some work done!

This one's also in the Classifieds:
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/1906-Gibson-...4AAOSw65FXsyb-

Sad to say, it's a good deal less original than the seller seems to think. Refinished in sunburst, Loar-style pickguard attachment, fretboard is from much later than the 3-point era. I'm inclined to think it was worked on in the mid-'20s and completely re-necked at the time. See the neck joint photo; the neck doesn't look clubby enough to be original.

1906 is too early for a floating pickguard; assuming the pickguard actually is original we'd have to go with 1909 to 1911.

Any of the experts care to weigh in?

I'm no expert, but I think it presents itself well. Obviously has had some work done. If it plays and sounds as good as he says, it might be a nice player's piece and something different than what everybody else is playing.

Bridge is wrong for a 1906 - I wonder if the re-neck didn't increase the break-angle to allow for that taller bridge. The older 3 -pt F2's tended to have very short bridges. They certainly are no banjo-killers and tend to sound more like Bowlbacks. The Tailpiece is deffo off an older F2.

    Here's a 1904...

If the reneck was done in the 20's you'd think they would have put a truss rod in it unless they had old necks laying around. It's definitely not that early and original.

Well, the pickguard attachment says '20s, but not all the work had to be done at once. Maybe it's not a complete re-neck, but the fretboard has a third-fret marker so it's from later than 1919 or so, right?

That headstock has been redone, probably with the reneck. I'm afraid mine isn't anything to go by - the Maple Leaf version.

I agree. The "The Gibson" inlay looks like late 20's style straight across. They probably would have done a truss rod if it was re-necked, and they weren't doing 3 piece necks at that time either. I think it may just have gotten a new fingerboard and peg head overlay in the late 20's. And maybe the refinish at that time as well.

I have played a couple of these and I certainly wouldn't describe them as "Banjo Killers".
They had a lovely round tone, but I would describe to tone as soft and lovely, not loud.

My '06 three-point F-2 has what appears to be the original bridge, height 3/8 inch.

Concur that mine's not a bluegrass "chop" machine, but I wouldn't call its sound "bowl-back," more like the other Gibson oval-holes of the same vintage: very sweet, warm, sustaining well, not sharp or percussive. I'd say "tubby," if I knew whatthehell that meant...

This one has been taken down on eBay. Same guy has a really cool 1928 Regal Superior 2221 2 point with a Stahl label listed -- I guess that makes it a Stahl.....

Uh-uh; standard Gibson scroll headstock, unbound.

That "repaired" headstock in Post #9 is frightful. Mine does, of course, have the nifty inland Handel tuners.
