    Default 1993 Gibson A5G Bozeman Odd Neck Finish

    Hello;
    I just bought a 1993 Gibson A5G and love it .
    The neck finish has a gummy finish that has kinda worn off in places but is still there above the first position.
    After searching the posts I Find a few references to the neck finish( poly and nitro)
    "They experimented" with according to Mr. Hutto.
    I don't want to remove the gummy part . ( It goes against my grain to modify anything on this fine an instrument)
    Can anyone address this experimental finish.?
    Thanks for taking the time to answer,
    Dub in Sprinkeburgh

    I may but I've removed poly finish before (old Peavey guitar ) It was a fight to the finish.
    bad pun intended.
    I think there is still good nitro under the gummy stuff .

    hey dub
    single edge razors, held perpendicular to the neck, start at the headstock part and hold with both thumbs and index fingers, draw the blade towards the heel. gentle light pressure-don't dig in with it, let it roll material as it goes. do it over and over and gently remove what finish you want, then use some 600 grit paper, finish with 0000 steel wool. takes maybe an hour total and that includes clean up.

    I will consider it because it is bothersome.... like a rock in your shoe.

    I'm with Spruce on this one. Get rid of the "gummy" and most likely improve your playing considerably. My '56 F-12 had that black "paint" on the neck that got very sticky (gummy) in warm, humid weather (basically, all the time here in FL). I took it down to the bare wood (speed finish) but you may be able to knock the gloss back with some light sanding with 600 grit paper without disturbing the look of the finish.

    My old Les Paul guitar had a sticky neck and it bugged me to dispair, so I took the finest steel wool (0000 I believe) and lightly rubbed in order to just remove the glossy shine. It actually worked wonders. Eventually my hands polished it back up to a more shiny finish but it never became sticky again. I think sometimes the super glassy finishes grab hold of your thumb a bit. Just putting some microscopic variation in the surface breaks that hold. I liked that it was reversible. I could easily have it buffed back out to a glossy shine if I wished.

    Good work. Btw is that a crack in the neck or just a scrap?

    I like 0000 synthetic steel wool, use light pressure, circular motion then buff with a coarse fabric. If you use steel steel wool on instruments with pickups, you want to tape or seal them so you don't end up with little steel flecks sticking to them.
