    Default Dude

Has anyone besides me started their stopwatches on how long that Dudenbostel 1-A at The Music Emporium will last? It was posted a few hours ago.

    I know I'm sorely tempted.

Yes I can imagine a room with no inch to spare with mandos slung all over the walls! That would be the finest of wallpaper.

I played the Campanella the other day. I cannot imagine why it is still there.

The pictures are taken by Andy who works there who is also a professional photographer.

I played the Dude today and almost
went home with it. Neck might have
been a little big for me which IS the
reason I didn't leave with it. If you want
A pure no nonsense mandolin that'll just
Keep on giving with little problems. Then
    that is the one

The Music Emporium link led me to look at their other mandolins. The Gilchrist F-4 is also a gorgeous instrument, although a little more than I should spend (to stay married anyway.) In the F4 vein, the Collings MF5-O is also quite nice, and a bit more doable in price. A good time to visit them.

I would be very interested if the nut width was a little smaller. That's a little chunky for my taste.

I wonder if the chunky neck was for sustain/tonal enhancement or ergonomics. I like them small and flat like Gibson's Loar era but some of those older ones have a richness of tone and sustain that's hard to beat. My blacktop A-4 has that old time hammer dulcimer richness in spades but was awkward to play until I replaced the original nut and string spacing. This leaves the unused portion on the outer edges where it's less noticed. I don't understand everything I know about how the neck plays into the whole but I'm convinced it's more than ergonomics and structural considerations only. I can't imagine much better than getting to compare that Dude and Campanella together in one sitting.

For the price of the Gil you could almost get the Dude and the Campanella. I love Joe's mandolins. They feel so comfortable and the tone is so even, full, and rich. I need to hide my checkbook.

Ha! Mandobar you make a good point. Bang for buck thinking totally destroys open minded mandolin tasting and enjoyment.

As it turns out I just can't own them all ....... alas ..... Gilchrist , Dudenbostel. Kemnitzer, Monteleone ..... I keep buying tickets but I'm not holding my breath ..... The Dude that sold at Carter's this past year is one of the finest mandolins I have ever played. Joy to them that gets this one. R/
    I love hanging out with mandolin nerds . . . . . Thanks peeps ...
