    Default Irish mandolin

    Hello everyone,

I'm new to the Mandolin Cafe, and the best I can do to introduce myself is copy/paste my youtube channel link ! I play irish music on mandolin and tenor banjo.

Welcome Tergal, although as Bertram says you need little introduction. I'm very grateful to you for your youtube channel - I've learnt a great deal from you. Your technique is perfect - fluid right hand, economy of left hand movement, Jig picking pattern, triplet and left hand ornamentation. Where did you learn your skills? Formal tuition or did you arrive at it by your own volition?

Thanks for your kind words James. I'm glad that your learned something on my channel ! I've learned by myself first. Then, playing at sessions is the right thing to learn tricks and tunes.

Would be interesting to know what beginners really need to make more focused videos on my channel.

Hi Tergal, welcome. You´re late here. I´m also following your youtube-channel for some years now. Great playing and very nice tune selection. And I always liked the fact that your videos have good recording quality, so you can really appreciate the sound of the mandolin.

checked out your youtube channel. Great playing style! I also noted a few tunes on a white-face Gibson A3, which is my main mandolin too - not that I didn't also notice your Collings.

Thank you Jill ! The next tutorial will be "The Maids of Mont Kisco", a classic reel played in the key of Am. I will post this one today but I'm pretty sure you already know this one.

Excellent. I'm offering this constructively, and from the perspective of a fledgling player.....I don't know how it would be done (a tech savvy computer nerd would know) but I think it would be helpful to have a moving symbol following the music sheet so we could follow along more easily. A minor point really because I would figure it out eventually.

Interesting - are you looking for a specific tone? What does this Collings (MTO model?) have, tone-wise or playability-wise, that the A3 didn't have?
2005 Weber Yellowstone f-style oval in "desert dawn" - no name yet but a she.
    1927 Gibson F4, "Mata Hari"
    2004 Eastman 604 "Belle"
2001 Martin 0015 mahogany - no name yet, but a he.
1875-ish Hungarian fiddle ("Uncle Bill") that I can play about half a tune on. Some day.....

The Collings has a more balanced sound to my ears, and a slim neck compared to the old Gibsons. It's punchier too.
But I miss the vintage tone of thoses mandolins, you know what I mean .

Welcome Tergal, I too have been following your Youtube videos. You have great technical skill, and your style is really musical and sensitive. (sometimes people replace soul with too much ornamentation).
I have to admit though I love the sound of the old Gibsons, but having sold one myself I understand your choice of the modern axe. Keep up the good work! BTW I secretly long to get that old Gibson A1 back again!

Maids of Mount Kisco is one of my favorite tunes but I'm prejudiced. Mount Kisco NY is my home town!

I've found a way to improve my tutorials. I'm uploading a beginner lesson to learn an easy jig : the swallow tail.
