Mark, I am actually going down to play a few mandolins, including the used Campanella F5. That said, you never know what will strike your fancy.

That just my be the most lovely mandolin I've ever seen! Well done Tom! A work of art in wood and wire, and it makes incredible music!

Every detail is perfectly executed right down to the inlaid truss rod cover integrated into the torch and wire motif. Just stunning!!

Stunning. Interested to hear the review of this and the Campanella. I will be out there in a few weeks and will take these for a spin as well if they are still around.

I've never owned an Ellis, and probably never will, but, I think the price is really fair for this level of craftsmanship. It just doesn't really seem out of line at all, considering how much work this all is, and the obvious quality of his work.

I was down there a few weeks ago and I played every mandolin they had, except for the Campanella which was going on approval at that point. The winner in the crowd I did get to play was amazingly not the most expensive mandolin, so it does pay to play these things before yearning for them.

I know we like to give Tom credit, but Pava has her hands on just about everything in that shop, and she is a real talent.

I agree, Pava is a master luthier as well as Tom!

2nded. I actually just took ownership of Pava Player #168 and it is fabulous. Very different from my Ellis F5, but definitely some similarities. The playability is what you expect out of the Ellis shop. Tonally they are very different, but they both have big expansive sounds, great fit and finish, and top notch playability.

Agreed. My Pava is a Player model as well. I think the common perception is that a Pava is a stripped down Ellis, but Pava mandolins truly have a voice of their own. To me, Pava and Ellis mandolins are like siblings. They have a lot in common, and they come from the same stock, but each has their own personality.

The wood for the back and sides on this one is over the top gorgeous...Tom somehow finds incredibly beautiful stock...seeing as how his main business is inlay (Precision Pearl) he saves the best pearl for his own instruments and again, the craftsmanship is superb. Prices keep creeping upwards.

when you compare the price of Tom's mandolins with the prices the "Gang of Four" (Gil, Dude, Monte, Nugget) ask for theirs... well, it seems like this one might be a bit of a bargain...

also, just wonderin'...is it my imagination, or does this stellar example of Tom's work have a slightly different treatment to the end of the fingerboard extension? looks a little more elegant to me...
