Perhaps the solution is to give in to the (inevitable) MAS as soon as you can - one precious mandolin in the case, one 'playable, but cheap' one, on the wall?

    Welcome to the cafe.
I've seen wall hanging go horribly wrong.
If you care for your mandolin, case it.

I agree to case it. In my location, the humidity bounces up and down this time of year with afternoon thunderstorms and dry, hot sunny days. I also turn my AC on and off quite a bit. I know the mandolin is affected because in the morning it will intonate flat, and in the evenings sharp, so I keep my mandolin cased, but with the case out in the open, and in a place where I can see it often. This tempts me to play it more often.

As for case odors, I've come up with my own solution: I keep a Peppermint plant growing at all times in my little herb garden. When it's time to prune, about once every two weeks, I put Peppermint cuttings into a little cotton sack and toss the sack into my mandolin case. This makes everything smell nice and adds a touch of humidity to keep the interior humidity around 45 percent for awhile. Results do vary, but the humidity stays in an acceptable range. When I open up the case to take out the mandolin, I give the bag a little squeeze and it releases a nice aroma into the air and scent to my hands. I also use "Music Nomad String Fuel" and it has a very pleasant coconut smell.

Another vote for case storage here. Watching a mandolin fall off the wall would NOT be pretty.
I knocked over a mandolin on it's stand sometime ago that resulted in some ugly damage and learned my lesson. Frankly, I even carry my mandolin(s) from the room where they are stored to the family room in the case. That way, when I get up for any reason, it goes back in it's case. It takes 5 seconds to open a case. Did I mention I use the case?

If anyone would like a free barely used Hercules mandolin stand, PM me. Just cover shipping. I knocked over an Ingles stand--YMMV.
