    I agree with Adrian/HoGo that a circular path is more obvious. If the patch has an 'organic' shape and well-matched grain it can be pretty hard to see. Here are a couple of patches in rough sanded maple. The left one could be better, but the one on the right is almost invisible in less brilliant light. Under a dark finish they should be pretty unobtrusive.

    I like that idea. Maybe add one above and one below it to make it look like it was intentional. You could even use a contrasting wood. Make'em just large enough to cover the slipup. I'd be happy to own that instrument.
