The best songwriter of all for me. Watching him play a solo gig in front of a handful of listeners and a lot of noisy drunks in a smoky pub on the Isle of Anglesey in North Wales in 1989 changed my musical tastes forever. Thanks Guy and rest in peace.

I just heard the news on my local public radio station, as they played several of his songs as a tribute.

Perhaps my favorite songwriter. He could convey so much emotion, character, and story in just a few perfectly chosen words. He will be missed.

    Don't be a stranger
If you're looking for a friend
If you want an even break
You've got to learn to bend

    You don't have a song
If you don't know how to sing
    You don't have a prayer
If you don't know how to dream

What's the use in dyin' if you don't die tryin'
If you don't die tryin', what's the use?
What's the use in flyin' if you don't die flyin'
If you don't die flyin', what's the use?

If you're gonna roll the dice
    You gotta take a chance
Gotta get out on the floor
If you want to do the dance

If you don't know how to laugh
    You'll never learn to cry
If you don't know how to fall
You'll never learn how to fly

My thoughts, too. Had to settle for Bulleit and playing "Dublin Blues" on my guitar. Man, Guy Clark was awesome. Listening to him is like taking a master class in songwriting.

Absolutely one of the best songwriters ever... with Gordon Lightfoot. My (also, sadly now gone) best friend Nick Evans spent some time with Guy and Susanna when he was working on his biography a few years ago. It is well worth a read. There were also many stories Nick told that did not make it into the book for various reasons.... can't remember if this is in the book or not, but one day he found him with a whole bunch of random words stuck on a board with Guy throwing darts at them! "I'm getting ideas", he said. Then went on to tell Nick how often seemingly unrelated words can turn into poetry if you "just get them in the right sequence". He could certainly do that.

The biography is now out of print, unfortunately, but can still be found if you look. It s still the only biography ever produced on Guy. Nick was a huge fan, and a very good songwriter and musician in his own right. I first heard some of Guy's songs when Nick performed them, in fact. I still can't hear them without a tinge of sadness. Even more so now.

Celebrity deaths usually don't faze me, but this one left me feeling like I'd been punched in the gut. He was one of the greatest song writers of our era, with a peculiar wit and a great style. He was, at least for me, the quintessential writer and singer of Texas style music.

One of my all-time favorite songs of his, below. If you can get through it without at least cracking a smile, there's something wrong. And the mandolin playing was pretty groovy too. He did have a request in that song, though, for after his death. I wonder if they will honor it?

Guy Clark was one of the greatest storytellers of our time. His ability to use words that painted a picture in your mind was unparalleled. His songs transported you to that very moment in time he was singing about. By the end of one of his songs you feel like you have lived through that experience with Guy. The world is a better place because Guy Clark shared his poetry with us!
