Always enjoy these thread bumps Nick. I'm not a big fan of the '30s block inlays, but I have to admit the Sam Bush inspired F5 is a beauty.

Oh and I believe the NFI part. Not so sure about your lack of builder bias.

That one looks incredibly beautiful. I'd love to see it in person....and...ummmm....play it too.

Yeah Ivan, mine has the chopped fingerboard as well, and I it's not my favorite by far, but I don't like the Florida either. I'd much prefer the Doyle Larson style of fingerboards. I think they are an elegant alternative to the chopped look, and can't be much more expensive to make.

Saw that in person at Mountain Song Festival in Brevard, NC a couple weeks ago. Not really sure what it was, but I felt like there was no tone whatsoever. I wasn't sure if it was just the sound guy or the pickup or what, but I just did not care for it. His playing was pretty good otherwise.

For the colored topped mandos like the blue, I am not fond of the entire mando being 1 color. Only top being blue fits more my preference. but if the back was to be colored, I'd leave the sides with a traditional color. All one color makes it look K-Mart-ish.

Every time I've seen Brent Truitt play with the Steel Drivers he was playing a Gilchrist F5.

I got to meet Dave Harvey at last years IBMA. He was manning the Gibson booth and answering questions about the new mandolins on the table. A super nice guy and some nice mandolins too. I must admit that I thought the binding around the scroll was not as well executed as I expected on one or two of them. I look forward to seeing some new ones this weekend.

Thread Bump: new tribute model of Monroe's Loar F5....all I know is what Dave posted to Facebook below. I will say this though, that based on a conversation I had with him months ago, I figured it was coming down the pike; just couldn't say anything about it!

Dave Harvey: "This a tribute mandolin project that started with Ricky accidentally breaking off the peghead scroll off his Skaggs model, distressed Gibson F-5 mandolin.
We are thrilled with the results, hope you like it! It looks, and sounds 94 years old!"

I like it a lot, particularly the wood and staining, but the pure white binding (because it's under NC lacquer) somehow doesn't fit my vision of an acoustic mandolin.

It's there because that's what the originals had.

I myself prefer ivory colored binding.
