Thread: Steel String for Tenor Guitar or Baritone Uke brainstorming

Default Steel String for Tenor Guitar or Baritone Uke brainstorming

    Hi All,
I play Baritone uke in low G - C tuning (GCEA) and am thinking of getting a similar setup for steel strings. Thinking of converting a Oscar Schmidt OGHS kids guitar into a 4 string.
The sting gauges would probably be .024 .016 .013 .010 which is quite thin and may not resonate an acoustic instrument but I would also be installing some sort of pickup for occasional performances. Is this a crazy idea? Any thoughts and or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Grandpa G

Sorry, just realized I misread your post, so I've had to delete half my reply! Its hard to advise you without knowing the scale length of the proposed guitar or how it's braced, but those strings sound light.

Have you thought about retuning your baritone uke in fifths? I've just tuned a 20" tenor banjo in CGDA tuning with strings from a standard classical guitar set and it sounds great. If you were thinking of using a pickup, that would solve any volume concerns. Lots of choice with nylon strings these days and the wound strings often have quite a powerful tone.
    Good luck,

    Dean

2 tenor guitar tunings Chicago is like the high 4 on a guitar DGBE

the 5ths tuning is Tenor banjo normal CGDA, string heavier and tune lower Irish is GDAE

Be concerned that you May Pull the glued on bridge off a Uke since they did not build them to

take the higher tensions of steel strings ..

I just got a 17 fret Tenor banjo* 19.75" scale and am going to put a standard tenor banjo string set on

though it may be a bit light tension due to the scale being shorter ..

May Bump up to an ITB set 12-16-, 24w-36w next ..

*Gold tone , only $200, 1/3 of MSRP. New!
