Default In the Classified - Is this a great deal?

Just saw this posted in the Classified and thought its a great price on a Weber Fern...especially when you look at the original asking ($8,999) price!

I'm thinking this is one that I'll look back on and wish I had not let it slip away.

If I were looking for one, I'd have bought this one already.

The price "was" $8,999 until they realized the finish is "Vanrish", not "Varnish". Click on the link above

It is beyond me why this hasn't been snapped up yet. Drop dead gorgeous! If it sounds half as good as it looks, you'd be just fine there.

I checked in with the Mandolin Store about it. Yes it's a beaut and tempting, and apparently great sounding.

    Hope my spelling is correct.

Currently,a Weber "Fern" costs $9,600 US (£6,795 UK) - of course part of the UK price is our tax. At the price the ads.'Fern' is going for,if it's a typical sounding 'Fern',it's a real bargain. If you can afford it,buy it - ''he who hesitates'' & all that !!!. ''Been there done that'' myself ,& i'll never forget it either,

It's always risky to pose a question like this, because somebody may silently answer "yes" by responding to the ad rather than your post. Those are the cases when you hope that karma is real.

Nine days earlier, Dennis ran this ad:

    http://www.mandolincafe.com/ads/96348#96348

It seems strange that he only waited nine days before dropping an already low price by $500.

If you have the $, and if there is the usual 48-hour trial period, you can buy it and try it out. If the low price reflects something more serious than the Mandolin Store's desire to free up a space on the wall, the gamble will cost you just the shipping cost to send it back.

The price drop might be an indicator that buyers are looking at 'other brands' which are less expensive & 'new'. However, there could be other factors involved. I was offered my 'used' Ellis "A" style at a considerable saving over the price it had been advertised at,& belive me,it had nothing wrong with it. It simpy suited the vendor's financial purpose to sell it at that cost at that time,

Apparently Weber's models intentionally vary quite a bit in sounds attributes.

Anyone with experience hearing an exceptional sounding Weber Fern have thoughts as to general sounds characteristics? Bell-like, woody, dry, modern, etc.?

That was one of the last Webers I finished before I left Bend. It has the Weber Celtic knot on the back of the neck (very, very few of those in existence), and it sounded fantastic before it went to winter NAMM in 2014. I'd love to hear it today. That is quite a steal. Wouldn't mind having that one myself!

Yes, this was one that got away. I actually talked with Bruce Weber at length about this Fern earlier this week. Based on that Celtic knot on the back of the neck, Bruce confirmed that Bret had done the finish work just before he departed. Bruce remembered it and thought it was a steal. I emailed Dennis to make the purchase but they were already shipping it off to Japan.

BTW, Bruce is a super nice guy. And Bret, he had the highest praise for you and your work. Best of luck in your new endeavor.
