Thread: OP's not responding to advice

Default OP's not responding to advice

Maybe I'm being becoming a curmudgeonly old git, but don't you just hate it when someone comes onto the forums asking for advice about XYZ issue, and then just disappears!

No follow up, no thanks for those who took the time to respond with advice, nothing at all.

Not good manners in my book. Not good at all.

    Rant over!

I thought advice was a lot like opinions, good or bad. No one's required to follow or heed it. None the less, I'm sure the op was happy to get whatever.

I have to agree with Johnny. Folks here tend to take this mandolin business very seriously, and when someone asks for help, the community responds with sage advice, insight, and resources, as well as some wacky notions and cranky commentary.

A modicum of common courtesy is the only reward needed, and a quick "thanks" shouldn't be too much for anyone.

Maybe, sometimes, it is because it takes some of us a long time to actually take any action...

In my defense, even though that thread is old, I only got the mandolin over the weekend.

Certain amount of posting in Forums seems like throwing a stone in a pond to watch the ripples

as people respond with their varied opinions, Including This One.

I agree with Johnny, also. It happens a lot here. I remember the one about the Loar found in California last year.............well, we're still waiting to hear what happened!

I guess I'm guilty of occasionally getting on a washing machine website (or whatever) and picking their brains until I figure out what belt I need to replace and then, of course, they never hear from me again! I guess there is a logic to that -- once I fixed the washing machine, I no longer need the advice of the website. Same with the Loar, once they figured out what it is and where to sell it, they don't need us anymore!

There could be (sometimes) the "overwhelmed" factor. Like when an innocent comes along and says, "Someone just told me that mandolins open up over time. Anyone have any thoughts on this?" I can see someone ducking from the fallout after that.

Some jump right in and get involved in the Cafe, participate, engage in discussion and debate, keep everyone else posted on their progress.

Others don't. They stick their oars in, stir things up a bit, perhaps get the info they need (or don't), go on their way. It's the way it goes...

I don't care if people thank me for advice or not; I'm not in it for any awards or gratitude (assuming anything I say on this forum is helpful to anyone, which it may not be).

I just want to know if they got what they needed and worked through their issue.

    Hey Johnny60,

It's been 5 hours and 13 minutes since you posted, and 16 people have taken the time to respond to your post.

All in good fun man, all in good fun!

In all seriousness, I think that good manners dictates that an OP should at least thank folks for advice, even if he didn't follow it. It's even better when the OP follows up with what he did and how it worked out. But the truth is, many people are busy, and it is possible to ask a question, check back a little later, and then forget about it altogether. Especially if one is active in multiple threads.

    Thanks for all the responses!

To be fair, I get that people are busy and sometimes it takes ages to get things done. I'm no different. I asked a few weeks ago about rounded straps. Got some really helpful responses. I thanked people for their responses but haven't actually done anything about it yet!

And those washing machine enthusiasts are complaining about your lack of consideration! Especially the "catch and release" types (from California?) who periodically flood the market with sweet-running Hotpoints while they continue searching for restorable Crosleys and Kelvinators.

Can I respond with a blanket Thanks for all the fish? I get a lot of useful help around here. Being old myself, with my memory I don't even know if I responded after about five minutes after I post. :-)

Last Sunday in Church a young person sang a beautiful solo. It was very, very good and I could tell he worked hard to master his part. I was moved.

After service I approached him, shook his hand and then said "nice job young man".

It was scary how much I sounded and felt like my dad in that moment.

If this continues, I'm well on my way to "becoming a curmudgeonly old git" like he is.
