Default St Anne never sounded this good!

Ok, hyperbole, but I really like this. Joe Walsh is one of my favorite mandolinists and Courtney Hartman is spectacular. I am seriously considering Joe's Peghead Nation course. Maybe this should be in the bluegrass section but it's also Irish and kind of a modern version of a classic.

Fantastic use of pick/volume dynamics. I love the way they play off each other, good use of improv. Probably a bit too improv-ey for the traditional masses. Thanks for posting.

I like his use of passing? chords - might try and learn some of that for this tune.

St. Anne's Reel is Canadian; there are English-Canadian and Quebecois versions. Popularized by Don Messer, I believe.

Joe Walsh is an outstanding picker and I've been hooked on his "Sweet Loam" album for the past several months.

Looks like that's an Ellis he's playing.

I think that F5 he's playing is an Elliott.

Goose 2 is correct, that is the mandolin used on Sweet Loam too. I believe he started using his Gilchrist A-5 on the E-and-a' album he did with Darol Anger, Courtney Hartman, Lucas Poole, and Sharon Gilchrist and on the Mr. Sun album, both of which are phenomenal albums. I believe there'll be a new solo album from him later this year featuring Brittany Haas, Courtney Hartman, and Bruce Molsky...pretty excited to get a hold of that as any thing I've heard from Joe has become an instant favorite!

I appreciate the information. Had a $25.00 gift card that was setting my pants on fire. Just downloaded the MP3 versions of Mr. Sun and E and A. Listening in right now!

Actually it's Canadian, not well known in Ireland at all...

Ah, you're right. This has come up before, and it fools me every time. That script just doesn't look like it says Laplant from a distance, and it's too close to other scripts.

You'd think mandolin builders would make their peghead logos a little more distinctive so they could be more easily distinguished from one another at a distance. I know I'm not the only one who has to squint to see what it says!

Thanks for the info! I guess I just assumed. Apologies to St Anne, Canada and Ireland.

Thumbs up Re: St Anne never sounded this good!

Thanks for duet video outsidenote. The co-play between their two voices in both videos is so organic and playful. As much as I like the percussive nature of an F/A-5 the complete absence of it from their supportive rhythm is both inspiring and refreshing. I say voices because they aren't playing brand X or Y but have assimilated their chosen singing voices be it guitar or mandolin and it is now a part of themselves and uniquely theirs. Together they twist and sew the many meandering divisions of melody together into a tapestry of expression without straight line percussive chord borders. I didn't see an applause Icon, but this one needed one. Great inspiring stuff.

Yes, it's Canadian! Folks might like to know that St. Anne is the patron saint of Quebec. July 26 is the feast day.

I was lucky enough to catch this - it was a Joe Walsh mando workshop at at Joe Val Festival, maybe in 2009 or 10? Wonderful performance, and Joe just kept inviting friends up to play. Very generous performance, he was just a kind man there. More of a performance than a teaching festival.

And Sweet Loam is in my top 5 most played albums for the last ten years.

Thank you for sharing that video. It is a great example for those of us trying to familiarize ourselves with mandolin and fiddles tunes.
