    Default Saw Sierra Hull Show

Sierra Hull played the Quad Cities, last night with Justin Moses (banjo, dobro, mandolin), and Ethan Jodziewicz (bass) and wow, what a show! All three were top notch and tight as a unit. A highlight was a mandolin duet between Hull and Moses. If she comes through your area, I highly recommend going.

Only drawback is I'm going to feel like my mandolin's rolling its eyes at me whenever I pick it up, for the next few weeks.

I plan to catch that show up in Mayberry next Saturday.

(And yeah - I probably won't bother playing for a day or two afterwards)

I was there too. Got turned around coming down and missed most of the first band but saw all of Sierra's show. I saw her about 8 years ago at IBMA and Merlefest. She has done nothing but get better.

I was hoping to make it over from Des Moines, but early meetings today ended that. Really regret missing it. Glad to hear it was a good show.

I saw the show a couple of weeks ago in Asheville, NC, and it was great. There is a nice variety of music, and all three musicians are incredibly talented. I thought Sierra handled the stage aspect of the show in a really great way also. And, I had a nice visit with Sierra (no relation) Justin and Ethan afterward. Really great folks. Highly recommend.

Cool, CarlM! That's what I was saying to my wife as I left; it's great that she's so young; she can keep improving.
BTW, do you know if there are any mando-player hangouts in the QC???

That's great to hear, Patrick. Yes, great and low-key stage presence. You're spot on about the variety! Those are three versatile artists.

Hey Mark, my mom grew up in Mt Airy, what's left of her family is still there. I love that place. Haven't been in a while, but last time I was there it looked like the downtown had fallen on hard times. Like so many downtowns.

I think one of the reasons I love old-time music so much is that it keeps me connected with those family roots. Even though none of them were musicians. But the world so encourages loss of memory and history now. Anything we can do to keep it alive is a good thing. Sorry that was kind of off topic.

The show in Stoughton was very good. The group was very engaged with the audience and played their hearts out. Although it was obvious after the show that they were all tired, (I assume from playing back-to-back gigs on tour). My wife is now a Sierra Hull fan.

They played in the Stoughton Opera House. Nice venue, (>100yrs old), that I was unaware of before this weekend.

A beautiful venue can really enhance a good show. I used to live in Boulder Colorado, and seeing shows at the Boulder Theater really felt like an event.

There used to be some jams at Blackhawk Park but I am not sure if there are anymore. There was a group at Colona, Illinois too at one point but I lost the info on where they meet at. There may still be people doing Old Time at Chris Foss' place in Muscatine. There are also some different jams down there, some open to the public and others private. Send me an e mail at mallycj@aol.com and I can forward your contacts to some people down there but I cannot promise that their jams are still going and open. I am in CR and there is not a lot going on here.

We took in Sierra's show last night in the Earle Theater in Mt. Airy NC. Small venue - nice sounding room - circa 1920's maybe.

Fantastic show if you like mandolin. Three incredibly talented musicians playing complex arraignments that fit together like a master luthier's dovetail joints.

Sierra sounded great on mandolin and vocals. Mostly her own tunes, which are simple but complex - not a 3 chord song for the night maybe. She is playing better than it seems humanly possible.

Ditto for Ethan Jodziewicz & Justin Moses . Ethan play bass fiddle like a cello when he wants and does the most amazing work I've ever witnesses on that instrument. Justin and Sierra play a mandolin duet of "cattle in the cane' that floored me. He is as good as she is.

Great show -recommended if you get a chance!

bluegrass-only lovers be warned. Just a couple of BG tunes. But if you like mandolin music you might not notice

What a great analogy, Mark; it's a spot on description, to boot!
