Like others, if I had won the Powerball, my plan was to buy up all the Loar F5s on the market as quickly as possible, which would in theory make them more valuable (something about supply and demand, I think...), and use them as investment items as well as play them or loan them out to trusted mandolin players who could put them to good use.

But since I only won $4 on my $10 outlay for tickets, I guess I'll just be buying a box of Kleenex to cry into.

That clerk at Shoprite sold me the wrong tickets. I told her I wanted the winning numbers.

I was sure I had this won. It was a disappointing evening at my house.

I won $4.00 on $60.00. You did well in my book.

I would try and buy John Reischman's Loar from him and Bill Monroe's Loar.

Unsurprisingly I did not win. Mostly because I did not play (being Canadian and far from the border). So, I guess I broke even last night!

You are on your way to not owning a Loar.

I'd probably try to get one from each popular time frame. A Crusher gen, a July 9 gen and a Feb. '24 gen. Maybe also an unsigned Loar for my cheapy. I'd also want a Loar H5, L5 and K5.

I was not one of the winners.
Looks like my dream of owning the 'Duane Eddy Gibson' will have to wait.

I know this is over but still... I'd make Grisman and Reischman offers they couldn't refuse... Really test their resolve

If you could make 2 of the greatest mandolin players alive rich in the process of procuring their instruments, it would probably be a win win. Especially since they could probably make a shoe string sound good.

Well since I didn't win, the only Loar I will be able to afford will be The Loar LM-370 (their cheapest F model).

I got 3 out of 6 numbers and won $7.00, enough for a set of strings. The rest of the Loar will have to be bought piecemeal over time.

A slightly contrary position: How many Loars does one really need?

Wouldn't one really good Loar suffice? With the caveat of course of being able to acquire maybe a Gil, Red Diamond, RDSMM, etc. as well. I'm all up for buying up the Loars, but as others have posted earlier, establish a foundation/lending library so players can have access to them. As far as John R. & Dawg's respective instruments, I'd love to play them but how are they going to benefit the world in my hands (working a full time 40+ corporate-cubicle soul-suck) versus those players? I'd rather hear those guys make music on the instruments that are really a part of their soul-fabric, than sitting in some locked room/vault waiting for me to get home and play them.

To counter what your saying Nick, if you won 1.5 billion would you work in a 40nhour soul sucking job. And Dawg and cos fabric is in their style and skill. I'm sure if they play on any instrument it sounds like them. If they had say an extra million in the bank they could just focus on doing whatever they wanted musically and would certainly have the means to find another suitable instrument.

Didn't win! I won't be buying any but, if I had won, I'd have made a phone call to Bill Halsey then he and I would take a little drive to Lansing and spend the afternoon with Stan at Elderly. Take a long hard sip of the Loar he has up there (is it still?) bring it home, and play that while Bill makes me one of his. Then a case of single malt for the builder, one for me and a relaxing rest of my life! After my wife tells her job "Good Day!"

    LEAST FUN ANSWER:

Winning a lottery would free up my time to pursue something no amount of money can purchase - getting real amazing on the mandolin. My first goal would be to get the Vivaldi I have been working on, and then the four Beethoven mandolin pieces. Bach soon after.

But that is not the fun answer. So I would sure spend some money on mandolins - likely some high end bowlbacks, and maybe a vintage F4 in awesome condition, a custom double necked mandolin/guitar. Nothing extravagant.

But actually I can take the $40.00 I did not spend on the Powerball and get another Blue Chip pick. Hey, now that is a great idea.
