Thread: Mandolin and Tenor Uke arr of Pastheen Fionn (Irish Air)

Default Mandolin and Tenor Uke arr of Pastheen Fionn (Irish Air)

Mandolin, tenor uke, and soprano recorder perform the very old Irish air Pastheen Fionn. 1 track of mandolin; 2 tracks of uke; and 1 track of recorder. I like how this uke (made by Makai) sounds like and Irish harp. The mandolin is my 1926 Martin bowlback.

mlinkins, thank you for posting this lovely tune. I wrote it out, as I couldn't find a source at first, but later I found it in O'Farrell's Pocket Companion (vol. III, p. 12, appearing as “The Pausteen Feaun or the Fair Child”), and in the Roche Collection (vol. 1, No. 22, p. 13). Here are my notation from your playing and the O'Farrell version: Click image for larger version.

    Harper,

Thanks so much for your transcription and the O'Farrell version! The source that we used was Jessica Welsh's book "Celtic Music for Flute." I had never heard the piece, but we were reading through Walsh's book and found this one. Such a beautiful (and interesting) melody.

This is such a lovely tune that I wrote descant and harmony lines for it. My version of the melody is a blend of Mark Linkins' and the versions from O'Farrell and Roche. My mandolin practice group liked it better in E minor than in E Dorian, so all the C's are natural, except one that I kept sharp.

It's fun to hear the mandolin / recorder combination. I have a copy of Walsh's "Celtic Music for Recorder," but have not tried to put the two instruments together. This has planted the seed of the idea.

Thanks a lot for this lovely tune. I recorded it to compare two of my mandolins in this kind of music.

It's so nice to hear the arrangement played, Leo. Thank you for posting it. I like both mandolins, though I lean towards the rounder tone of the Gibson.

Lovely renditions, Leo. I too go with the Gibson tone, I think, but of course it's very subjective.

    Leo,

Thanks for sharing your versions. Really lovely. I like them both a lot, but go along with the others in preferring the tone of the tone of the Gibson (for this piece/genre). I can imagine the Eastman being my preference for jazz.
