    Default Walter Johnson, June #61!

While visiting family in Charleston, I took the trek up to Campobello, SC, to visit with Walter Johnson and see and hear some of his work. I had played June #17, owned by a friend in South Florida, and even though the strings were quite old, I could tell it was a killer mando. Well to make a long story short, I purchased #61, and couldn't be happier. Should take delivery in a few weeks. Walter is a great guy, who is passionate about building high quality instruments, as exemplified by his statement that, "my goal is that each mandolin I make is the best I've ever made." If you are going to IBMA, be sure to stop by his booth and see his work! NFI, just a very happy picker.

My June #61, a bit further along. Walter says it should be readyearly next week. I was planning to drive back up (9 hr drive), but I've got a tropical storm headed this way, so I'm likely going to have Walter ship it. I was going to A/B it against the other two mandos he had in his shop, but they've all sold (imagine that!)

I played a friends #17 June last night with new strings. Absolute killer. I'm now headed to the dentist now to have him reset the fillings that mandolin loosened. If you are considering a well made, small shop mando, build entirely by hand (0% CNC), hook up with Walter! NFI.

I looked at the pictures of #52 on Walter's Facebook page. It's a beauty! It will be interesting to see how his x-braced mandos open up. #17 (tone bars) rattles the windows with a deep dry tone and great sustain. You can feel it thumping against your chest while you play it. My highly anticipated #61 is more simply appointed than yours, which is something I was looking for. I'll be playing bluegrass and Oldtime on it. The simple appointments match my D18.

Walter finished my new mando! Simple but elegant, and now comes the hard part-waiting for it to arrive. It will be interesting to hear how it sounds now as compared to when I played it in the white. I'll post a review once I have it in my hands on Friday. It will be difficult letting the box aclimatize!

WOW. What a great looking Mandolin. Yeah I mean....#52 has great deep woody tone. I'm very happy with it and I'm mostly bluegrass oriented in what I am playing

I really like the looks of that mandolin ~ simple, but elegant! Hope it sounds and plays as good as it looks.

    Enjoy it in good health

Nice looking instrument. I like the lacewood. It's too busy for much of it, but looks great in small patches like he's used.
