    Default Monroe and Duffy

I've been listening to John Duffy playing mandolin this afternoon on the Seldom Scene website. Duffy was awesome.

I ran into this picture of Monroe and Duffy. What mandolin is Monroe playing?

I don't know if he played the Ibanez outside of Japan and then it was for that ad.

I could be wrong. That mandolin looks too new for Bill.

Had to put this out here. Sorry to derail the conversation. Tony Trischka posted this on his Facebook page and apparently the t-shirt belongs to Sam Bush.

Bill Monroe had 2 mandolins,at least two mandolins were 'pokerised' at the same time. I believe that at times when his famous Loar was being re-fretted etc.,that it wasn't unknown for a mandolin to be loaned to him.So it could be his second mandolin,or a loaned one. Come to think of it,has anybody ever seen a photo.of Bill's second mandolin,i haven't,

If it were his own mandolin he would most likely have removed the pickguard.

It could be the late '70s F5L Gibson gave to him, most likely this one:Click image for larger version.

I suspect Henry is right and he might not have had time to remove the pickguard as Ralph has pointed out.

Although I'm not 100% certain, this looks like his Ibanez at Berryville in '69?
    Thoughts?

Now that seems more like a '50s Gibson.

Once again, "Eagle Eye" hits the nail! It's sure looking like a '50's Gibson to me as well, zoom in on the peg head.
    Good catch Henry!
