Thread: 1st build

    Default 1st build

Here's my first mando build; an A5 style using some amazing Sitka from Bruce up at Orcas with 30-40 lines per inch.
Have to link to my page, the pic file sizes are to big to link individually.

Nice looking mandolin. Can we hear it?
I'd bind the back of my next one.

Thanks. Yes, I didn't have the tooling to do the bending or routing around the heel cap, so I decided to forego it. It's been delivered to the commissioner, so maybe they'll post a clip at some point.

You can cut the heel cap piece from a solid piece of wood. Time consuming, and it leaves some short grain, but it'll work. Another thing I often do is cover the heel cap in a solid, dark piece of wood. Eliminates the need for binding and provides a nice accent to the back.

That's what I do on my guitar builds, but I really liked the idea, and look, of the heel cap being part of the back.

    Not bad for a beginner....
Just kidding-- that's spectacular. If it sounds half as good as it looks, it's a real winner.
