    Hi Mando geeks,

Below is a list of the make and models in order played. Feel free to leave comments.
    1-Kentucky F-5
    2-Collings MF5
    3-Pheonix Standard
    4-Stanley V-5c
    5-Gilchrist Model 5
    6-Dudenbostel F5
    7-Collings Mt2
    8-Duff F5
    9-Brentrup Stealth

Ok so I posted this in another section, but I just
realized it may be better suited in the general mandolin area.
This was recorded on an I-phone so nothing fancy, but if you put
on headphones you actually can hear quite a difference from mandolin
to mandolin. Hope it's ok I posted this twice...

Would love some opinions... Which is your fav mando? And why?
    Thanks,
    TL

Nice comparison. I like the sound of the Phoenix and the MT2 the best. The Duff had a sweet tone as well as the Dude. My least favorites were the two Brentrup's. I thought they showed a pretty harsh sound in the upper frequencies. One of the things this video showed was how close the Kentucky is to the sound of mandolins costing significantly more.
Thanks for taking the time to post this, although I'm sure you hated doing every minute of it. HaHa!

Thanks mandobassman! I can't begin to tell you how much we all enjoyed playing those mandos.
Of course I liked mine the best, but they really all were great mandos. It bums me out that some folks
Can't view the video up at the top of the page, cause it really shows the instruments Lowe and upper register.

You need less room noise and close mic it. They all sound very similar here.

I agree man, we'll save that for next time.
It was real spur of the moment, but honestly
Throw on some headphones you'll hear a pretty
    Big difference.

Correct Mike! Leah was very kind and set us up with a great gig at Eddys Attic. Then we got to meet you nice folks the next night. I believe i did have the MM then. Are you liking the Heiden?

I really like the Heiden. It's an awesome mandolin. What's your main axe now?

Well now. This is the right way to buy an instrument. What fun.

I must say that I'm now a fan of Duff mandolins. The Collings are my favorites however and they sound to me at least, most like the Gil and Dude. The Bentrup mandolins project the most. They really throw the sound out there. The 'batman' seemed to have more bass. And I'm surprised at how many mandolins sound a bit on the treble side. It must be the mic on the camera. Dude, and Stanley are other favorites.

Yes there will be a difference but when you add in room noise when miking, the comparison for the listener is false. A bassy mandolin in a bathroom will sound better than a trebly mandolin. Switch to a dry room and the trebly mandolin may sound more balanced. So I don't think this comparison is fair to the mandolins that may not sound "as nice". Change rooms and they may be the standout.

Yeah, I guess you could have loaded up all the mandolins and taken them to the nearest recording studio that uses Telefunken (or some such) microphones.
And you coulda hired Steffey to do the playing. Maybe next time.

For now though, I appreciate what you did. Thanks!

Too funny. But seriously, if you want a fair comparison ya gotta get rid of the room noise. No precise Steffey calibre playing required.
