Very nice. What's their storey?
I wouldn't put that Gibson that close to the Ellis with the Fern inlay. There might be some sort of meltdown.

Cool pics, and quite a pair you have there! So similar in general style and shape, but yet so different in all the details. I see big differences in the recurve, scroll shape, neck profile, shape of the f-holes, depth of the binding into the curve of the 'ear' on the peghead, etc., etc., etc. I'd never really noticed just how many of these little details were drastically different (aside from the usual stuff like tailpiece differences, pick guards, Florida, inlays, and such).
Beautiful master model. Do I have that one listed in the registry?

I bought the Ellis from Morgan Music and the Gibson from Frank Ray[Cedar Creek] it was his backup to his Loar he had just sold a D28 to a Doctor in Dallas and I met him there got to play the 42 Bone and picked up my Gibson, got to play Franks 23 Loar, that guy is a class act.

I've had the opportunity to play both of these instruments. They are superb examples of the art. Gibsons are scarce in these parts so getting to play a great one was a treat. The Ellis is a little more common and I've had my hands on several new ones. This is an early 2000's model so it was great to see how well they age. People with better eyes than I can point out the build differences but I'll tell they don't sound the same either. They both sound great but each has a distinctive voice.

We should do a mandolin tasting! It looks like we're not far from each other and it'd be fun to get a group of great instruments together.
Next time I am headed to Eddie Collins, I'll look you up and or Hills...................Best/joe
Great mandolins! The nut on the Ellis looks wide -- 1 3/16" like a Gibson Sam Bush model? Any problem switching back and forth?

Due to current budgetary restrictions the light at the end of the tunnel has been turned off -- sorry about the inconvenience.
Sorry for the late reply, the Ellis is standard width 1&1/8
