mules are neat animals, hope mules can be counted here in the mix, plus we have some open back banjo

one of my all time favorite songs, seen her perform it many a time, Gillian Welch............Hard Times

sit down, turn the lights off or low, absorb the feel

i like this song so much i'm going to list it again:

thats a great sounding banjo-probably a really old banjo

Kit Carson preferred mules to horses for "important missions". He said they were better foragers so, didn't need to carry as much provision for them and were just "smarter!"
    His words , not mine.
I thought of a couple tunes last night but, I was beaten to the draw!
Oh, "ElPaso" maybe a little new for this but, it has a significant horse presence.

This is one of my favorite songs. I had to put down my Paint horse and bury him a few years ago here on my homestead in Texas, and the words to this tune might as well have been a tribute to him (even down to the cactus). He was my best pal in every way, and it brings me to tears every time I hear it. If I could find a way to sing the tune without having to yodel, I'd make it part of my repertoire.

    Grey Eagle!

One of the most famous horses to come from Kentucky. Robert E. Lee's horse Traveller was his offspring.

    I like that one.

Then there is an old time tune related to the traditional Old Grey Mare we all know, called "Old Yellow Dog", or "Old Blind Dog", or "Brave Boys Died" or "Down in Alabam'". It was used as a tune for a Lincoln campaign song.

Bill Monroe did it as an instrumental, called "Old Grey Mare Came Tearing Out of the Wilderness"

There is also a OT tune called "Old Grey Horse Came out of the Wilderness" though I am not sure it is related.

Not old timey. But one of my favorites about a horse. Bout an old warhorse that doesn't get the credit he deserves.

Every time I come up with one, somebody beats me to the keyboard. This ain't B.G or O.T. but how about Comanche by Johnny Horton?
