    Default Considering a Mowry

In the ongoing search for great sound coupled with top drawer aesthetics I find myself captivated by the work of Andrew Mowry. I've been looking for a used Mowry F5 for quite a while and there are none to be found. (The last I saw on the market was on Mandomutt about a year ago.) For those who have a Mowry what is/has been your experience with your instrument....AND....is there anyone with a Mowry that might be interested in finding it a new home?

One of my biggest instrument regrets is letting go of a Mowry Octave Mandolin. I would recommend any Mowry instrument without hesitation. I'd love to get that Octave back again! When you get one, post again!

If you have not held a Mowry in your hands it is difficult to convey the level of skill and craftsmanship invested in his mandolins. I do not own one but, have had the pleasure of playing one briefly. They are awesome in detail.

I have a friend who has an older one. It is pretty beat up and doesn't have lots of bells and whistles. That said, it's a good sounding mandolin. There's a blonde 2 point for sale on the classifieds now that is over in Europe whose looks have my drooling. If it were here in the US I would likely have a difficult time restraining myself!!!

Why not buy one directly from Andrew. He's a terrific builder and a more terrific person.

The new listing in the classifieds is #100. I know Andrew had been saving special woods for that build.
I played it at Wintergrass last year. It is one beautiful instrument. If your a blonde lover there's no better.
It was literally only a couple of days old and we were in a very noisy room. So, I won't comment on
sound but it played like butter. When I got mine I was worried about the sound. I mean I just spent a lot
of money, for me, and it's sound was good, but……. Then about the third day, oh my. It just started
opening up and is still getting better every day.
You can buy my F5 David …….from my grandchildren ……when I'm dead.

If you want see some better pictures of #100 go to Andrews F5 Gallery and go down four rows. Beautiful stuff.
I tried to download but it wouldn't work.

I have a Mowry A5 that really is a joy to play and hear. Very responsive and light, plays easy, great fit and finish. It's the second mandolin in his A5 gallery on his website. It's a keeper. Get one.

I have seen some very excellent Mowry mandolins. Of course, they all differ because wood itself varies. The first Mowry I saw was in Greg Boyd's shop a number of years ago. It was okay but nothing special. This was one of his first mandolins so it is understandable that it was not spectacular. I saw some of his instruments at Wintergrass in past years and they were much stronger instruments. I live in R. L. Givens country and saw that when Bob was alive some of his instruments were outstanding while others were just so-so. The moral of the story is of course to always try an instrument out if possible because not everyone will be dead-on perfect even when the builder is held in high regard.

Sam. Are you going to the Tri Cities this year? Let me know.
I'll bring the Mowry and let you try a played in F5.
His Wintergrass mando's are usually fresh off the press.
He seems to time his Winter batch to show there.

But I couldn't pass it up.
Hope you don't mind me posting a few pic's of your baby.

The fit & finish of my Mowry F5 is second to none, just a beautiful instrument. The sound just makes you want to keep playing for days; can't tell you how many nights have drifted off into the wee hours with it in my hands. I play a lot of Bach and it is so perfect for that, as well as Americana.

After living with mine for almost a year, there are very few things I would change about it.

If I had a Mowry like that I could die happy.

Andrew made me a GOM, that I treasure. His work is tastful. The tone is awesome. He is also great to work with. I strongly recommend his work. I did play an F5 at IBMA a couple of years ago. Great playing and sounding instrument. Here are pictures of the GOM

Hi GK, no I don't mind you posting the pics, my Mowry is a very strong mandolin, nice mids especially. It's actually a two piece back of spectacular quilted maple, you can see the center seam if you look close, it's a very tight joint. I'm going to commission an OM from Andrew sometime in the near future. Really looking forward to that. You can't go wrong with the fit and finish of his mandolins and I'm sure Andrew would work it out with any buyer if for some reason the tone wasn't what you were after. He was very easy to do business with. Cheers, oh I believe mine is #86 from 2012

Anyone own an an oval-hole Mowry? His mandolins are certainly the most visually stunning, but I haven't found a sound sample of an oval hole.

That's a beautiful GOM Tony. I love Andrews 16" bodies.
CD. I think I found one video, but it was too fuzzy and Massimo never turned
all the way round to prove it. The sound wasn't very good anyway.
There's a very nice and different one in the classifieds right now.
Andrew made a full set : Mandolin, Mandola and Octave.

It was 9 days ago that I opened this thread and I am delighted to say I am now the proud owner of Mowry #100. It is an absolutely beautiful F5 blonde with white binding gold appointments and EVO frets. It was posted ever so briefly in the classifieds. As many before me have commented, Andrew's fit and finish work is second to none and the tone is outstanding. It has volume to spare and projects with clarity whether played with a light or heavy hand. The neck profile suits me to a T. Who knows how long any of us can go without MAS hitting, but I have a feeling this one is going to satisfy my thirst for a long time. Many thanks to #100's previous owner and Andrew Mowry for their willingness to answer all questions. So, please excuse me I'm going to play a bit.
