Thread: Restringing the Ibanez AVT1 Tenor as an Octave Mandolin

Question Restringing the Ibanez AVT1 Tenor as an Octave Mandolin

Recently tried an Ibanez AVT1 Tenor Guitar at Alto Music and fell in love with it right away and had to pick it up. Its in CGDA tuning, and I think I read somewhere on here that some folks were restringing theirs with a heavier gauge and making it an octave mandolin. Anyone had success with this? If so, what strings did you use? Did you find a set or did you have to frankenstein it from various other string packs? Finally, was it worth it? I'm loving the dola tuning right now and would only want to convert to an octave if it really keeps the sweet tone it's giving me now.

Specs show a 22+ inch scale, which is well within the octave mandolin range. I'd just buy a set of octave mandolin strings, put 'em on, and see what you get.

Here's some string recommendations for "tenor guitar - octave mandolin tuning" I found on the internet:

    Octave Mandolin Tuning
    G D A E 23" Scale
    040 025 015 011 x-Light
    042 027 017 012 Light
    045 029 019 013 Medium

Haven't tried it myself, so, for what it's worth...

These strings are specifically for that (http://elderly.com/accessories/names...et--JP450L.htm). But in my very short time experimenting I like heavier. Say .014, .024w, .034w, .045w
