    Default Your Mandolin Your Beer

Well, I just got my Mandolins and Beer sticker in this week and in the spirit of mandolins and beer I thought I would create a thread where we can post our mando's and a favorite beer!

    Here's mine:

I have a favorite bar, its owned by the Astoria Brewing company, but being some what Frugal

I drink Rainier, a pint can is $1.50 (happy hour rate) there ,, not a hoppy beer fan
Though the 3 Microbreweries and The Rogue Brewery outlet on Pier 39 serve the $5 pints .

I'm not a hoppy beer fan at all. Not one bit. Interestingly, I like my mandolins a bit dark and warm... and so it goes with the beer. I like Samuel Smith's Organic Chocolate Stout (very chocolaty) pretty much most of their line, Rogue - so many by Rogue - Hazelnut Brown, Double Chocolate, Chocolate Porter, Young's Double Chocolate, Founder's Oatmeal Coffee, Wolover's Pumpkin, Oatmeal, Brown, and Alta Gracias.

There's just so many good ones. I can't pick a favorite.

I really like Young's Choc Stout but find Sam Smith's way too sweet.

My favorite beer is probably Black Butte Porter by the Deschutes Brewery. And being a Texan I enjoy a Shiner Bock in the warmer months.

I discovered one advantage of whisky over beer, in a crowded jam session in Edinburgh, Scotland. What I discovered was that with whisky I could get exactly as "motivated" without having as frequently to extricate myself and bump into all the fiddlers on my way to the loo.

My recent diagnosis of diabetes settled matters, a beer is a very carby drink - and so its bourbon for me.

I drink Shiner Bock all year round! I tend to swing back and forth between Guinness, Belhaven Scottish Ale, Boddington's, and Shiner Bock.

I was worried at first you were talking about a Rogue mandolin. Pretty scary. Good thing I reread.

Fan of the Samuel Smith line, too - Nut Brown Ale, Taddy Porter, Oatmeal Stout. Haven't had Chocolate. Nice bottles, with the long, lean look. Don't have any in the house, will present something else shortly.

    Nice thread!

As I am on vacation, I have my lesser mandolin with me: a Washburn M-3.
The beer is a local beer of Salzburg: Stiegl Goldbräu. During summertime people in Salzburg bring their cows up to the alpine pastures for milk and cheese. You can hike up there over the meadows to a cabin and order bread with grey cheese and "Stiegl milk".
The pick is a Wegen. I drilled the "speedholes" myself.

I'm also a fan of cheap beers on hot days.... PBR, Old Milwaukee, Rolling Rock.

    Guinness to cook with.

For you Texans, I really liked the Shiner Marzen this past fall.

the most surprising one I had recently was the Rogue Sriracha Stout. Fantastically good. The full stout flavors and then a hit of spice that doesn't linger too long. Just perfect.

For those of you who don't drink alcohol, I'll submit how much I enjoyed good Ginger Beers while in Australia. Stateside, I like Reed's Ginger Beer the best. I also really like IBC Root Beer the best of the Root Beers I have available. Boylens makes a fine Root and Ginger ale as well.

I have another mandolin with me here on vacation. It is a Kentucky KM250 from the late 1980ies. It is strung with four strings only to make it easier to play for my daughter.
No beer for my daughter, this is fresh milk (real milk this time).

The Kentucky sounds surprisingly good. I replaced the bridge with a one piece design. If only I had Rob Meldrum's setup e-book back then in the 80ies... would have cured MAS - for a while

Wow. A jam in Scotland. That must have been such a pleasure.
"Whiskey" to those people means "SCOTCH". And the same goes for the fans of good "single malt" everywhere. If it isn't scotch, it isn't whiskey. You need to add a wee bit of water to scotch - in fact, in Scottish pubs, they would traditionally serve it with a small jug of water - add a teaspoon or two, to "release" the bouquet and the taste. The "tasters" do it like that.
I'm a Guinness fan. Next is from Alberta - BigRock "Traditional" ale. At home, I found a cheapie called JamesReady "Red" ale.
I also like my mandolins dark. My fav beers are all dark or amber ALE.
A local pub has many unusual brands - fun to try.
    Cheers
