    Default Action height

Are there general guidelines for action height (12th fret?) on a tenor? What do you folks have yours at?

There are a few variables. How hard do you pick? How much relief is in the neck? Light gauge or heavy gauge strings? You can take the saddle down a little at a time untill it buzzes then make a new saddle just a little taller.

I'm a medium picker. My tenor has about .015 relief and 3/32 at the 12th fret on a 23 1/4 inch scale with medium gauge strings.

That seems about right. I have a string height of 7/64 at the 12th fret but I tend to be a heavy picker. In my experience, string height at the 12th fret is typically between 5/64 and 7/64, so you're pretty much on target.

I like it as low as I can get it on a particular banjo or guitar, consistent with there being not buzzing and proper intonation. That usually falls above 2mm and below 2.4mm at the 12th fret. At least I think that's what I've been doing. I don't really measure it. I just adjust it to what plays the easiest and clearest.

Thank you all for the numbers. It helps to hear what others are at.
