Still curious if anyone on the café knows what number the Gilchrist was that Aubrey Haynie owned...probably SEVERAL years ago. Mike Cleveland owned it sometime after Aubrey. Mike has had two Gils, I'm curious about the tone-bar Gil he had BEFORE he bought his current X-braced Gil with block inlay. The last I knew of, Steve Richards owned it, but I know he sold it several years ago. I'm just trying to keep up with it because....
It's "the one" in my opinion...and if I ever find myself in the position to be able to acquire "the one", I want to know where it is...lol!

I don't know the number but I do believe he has owned more than 2 Gil's. I love the tone of the one on the album a man must carry on. Is that the one you are talking about?
Mando Mike, I'm honestly not sure. I just had the opportunity to play this particular Gilchrist a lot back when Mike owned it and then when Steve owned it. It was SO easy to play and had such great tone. PLUS, it naturally had a good bit of volume, but the thing that amazed me was how you could just hammer and hammer and hammer on that thing and it never distorted...it just gave you more and more volume and the tone never went away. I would sure love to play that thing again.

Mikes X braced, block inlaid Gilchtrist was originally mine. I had it made and even shipped the maple to Australia for it. It is a great mandolin. I sold it to Aubrey ( who has owned numerous Gil's) who sold it it to someone out West and it ultimately wound up with Mike. I tried to buy it back from Mike with no success. I have seen the other Gil, but don't really remember it that well.
Have a Great Day!

Big Joe....thanks for the information. I like to hear about where mandolins have been, who owned them, where they ended up, etc.
It sounds like my best bet to properly identify this mandolin would be to figure out where Mike first bought the tone-bar Gil...and trace ownership from there...surely someone that owned it before would know what serial number they owned. I know the guy it went to immediately after Mike owned it, but he doesn't know what serial number it was. :P
The search continues....

Can't help with tracking down your Gil, but somewhat related to this thread is the pickguard on mine, here. I caught Aubrey at the Inn one time and he had a similar p/g on his Gilchrist. I asked him what it was, where he got it. He pointed me to Charlie Derrington.
Wow, that's beautiful. What's the serial number and specs on that bad boy?

nice-lookin axe Alan... classy man... classy!
1998, #419. Ordered new by me through Carmel Music at that time. X-braced, one-piece quilt back, flat f/b, 20 frets. Block inlays on 1,3,5,7,10,12,15, sound holes bound in w-b-w. One of I believe 3 with 'The' inlay. No flowerpot or fern inlay. This was built during an era where he crafted several Artist-type instruments, among them #417 (I think), a blonde f-hole A with premium appointments known as The Golden Gilchrist. It is on its 3rd set of frets, the current are Gold EVO, installed by Skip Kelley. The truss rod cover is inlaid with 'Frank Wakefield' in pearlized script. The p/g was installed after the mandolin was built.
I like it.
Its a killer mandolin - had the pleasure of playing Alan's Gil and IBMA this year and its a special mandolin. Lots of character and complexity in the tone.
I can attest to the tone of Alan's Gil! That is one fine mandolin!
And my last thread hijack-Skip, that green F5 of yours blew me away too. Heck of a mandolin!!
I'll hack away (actually, a hack of a hack...)
Skip's builds and work holds up to anyone's. The first F-5 I saw of his was hanging in Richardson's Music in Fuquay, probably 15+ years ago. It was bought by a guy Tommy who picked it at Mays store often. I was very impressed with that early one, the ones I've seen since are just that much better. The green one was indeed killer.
Meanwhile...if anybody sees that Gilchrist....
LOL!

"your posts ... very VERY opinionated ...basing your opinion/recommendations ... pot calling ...kettle... black...sarcasm...comment ...unwarranted...unnecessary...."
Probably no relation to the fictional character on Green Acres, Mr. Haney........but my mind always goes back to those carefree days of silly 1965 television when I hear that name....
Interesting build:
f’pot, cremona, //, Euro/RM, 1pc, top & sides b/w, slightly deeper body, smaller f holes, slight v neck/wide, 3/4 size p’guard (made for Aubrey Haynie)
Discussion about it here........

Now in the hands of Joe K. Walsh who bought it from Andrew Marlin.
