Thread: Help Me Before I Get Addicted!

Default Help Me Before I Get Addicted!

A few weeks back I bought my daughter a cheapo Rogue for play around on hoping to catch her interest on something musical. It sounded horrible when it came in. A set of Martin stings and a little setup and I had it sounding decent. I told my daughter have fun, but I wasn't interested in it, I'm really into my guitars.

It always sits next to my chair and I would pick it up if I was bored or wanted to annoy the girls. Wouldn't you know, I started liking it and I taught myself to play in an afternoon (not well but tolerable). I ordered a Saga kit as I'm into that kind of thing, then I got conned into playing a special in church a few weeks from now with my wife (church pianist). Sorry, I'm not going to play that Rogue in front of an audience even though its pretty good for the price I think. No way the kit will be ready by then.

Due to reading posts here I just ordered a Kentucky KM-254. A good mando for the money and good enough to keep me happy for a while. My worry is that I will get hopelessly addicted and want something better and a lot more expensive.

So here's the question: is there any type of 12 step program for Mandolin addiction? Or maybe some other type of support group? I have about eight guitars and the last thing I want is to lust after those $1000 mandolins. Please help before I spend again!!

PS, my daughter is making some progress in learning to play. I'm going to tell her if she sticks with it I will give her the Kentucky.

Sorry, it's too late, you have MAS. You've got a fever and the only cure is MORE MANDOLIN.

Yes, you need to buy 12 mandolins to complete the program. But look at the bright side, you are already on step 2!

Boy have you come to the wrong place for help! We are all more like enablers.

For most of us, our 12 step program is buy an A5 style, buy an F5 style, buy an oval hole A, buy an oval hole F, buy a beater, buy a camping mando, buy a mandola, buy an octave mando, buy a bouzouki, buy a mandocello, and buy a resonator mandolin. What? That's only 11 steps? Must find something else to buy!

You will find no cure for MAS here. Sympathy, understanding, but no cure.

Nope it hopeless. You have already drunk the Kool-Aid when start fooling around with the Rogue. Accept your fate and go buy a Gibson Loar.

If I buy 12 mandolins along with the guitars I already own, wifey will kick me out and I will be homeless. Any chance I could put all of that in a shopping cart?

As you'll learn around here, $1000 is nice but a little bit more will get you into something even nicer!

I am always happy to hear of children playing musical instruments. congratulations on your new mandolins. and btw you probably do have a case of MAS. I have had it for about a year and coming to the café daily has made it more tolerable.

welcome and i'm here to tell you tactfully you've come to the wrong place to be talked out of acquiring mandolins!

i will make a prediction that your guitar herd will become smaller and your mandolin tribe will increase.

there's a couple of "enablers" around these corners as well, some are already in your shadow..................you've been warned

The 12 step program takes some serious dedication, effort, and money.
For me it is still a work in progress, and Im nowhere near step 12 yet.

    Step 1: Rogue A style
Step 2: Tanglewood Union F Style
Step 3: Michael Kelly Dragonfly F
    Step 4: Eastman MD615
Step 5: Sorensen Pacifica (just started working on this step today )

So, yes, there is a 12 step program, but it takes you deeper in. There is no way out!

It's too late! Resistance is futile! Just relax and enjoy the MAS.

You don't need 12 guitars. Sell a couple and get yourself a nice $2000 mando that will do justice to your obvious mando talents. Why hold yourself back? ;-)
As a player of various instruments my life is a constant juggle of purchases and sales to fund my several addictions. Enjoy the journey.
