Question Desperately Seeking Hardware: 1976 Ibanez F model

I have a 1976 Ibanez that I love dearly. The pearl-oid plastic tabs on the tuner shafts are held in place by tiny brass round-headed machine screws (straight slot head) that screw into the shaft of the tuner.

Apparently, one of them worked loose and fell out. I did not notice until the tab fell off, and a search of the (carpeted) area did not reveal the missing machine screw. Oh well, how hard can it be to find a replacement?

Pretty hard. I think the screws are about 60 tpi. I bought a batch of 2-56 half-inch screws that are close, but the shafts are a little too skinny and the threads are too coarse. Maybe the originals are metric, but I can't find any standard metric screw that seems to match.

Does anybody have access to replacement screws for this? Second choice: accurate specs for the required screw would be a help. (I'm not a machinist, and I'm not confident in my measurements.) I'll take photos if that would be helpful.

    Thanks!

Take a look at this thread:

    http://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/sh...-button-screws

If that doesn't get you enough information scan through these threads.

Being Ibanez, I would guess metric. Might be compatible with a guitar tuner, not sure. Not sure it would matter, probably a lot more guitar tuners screws out there, I'm thinking. I would remove one of the other screws (and don't lose it, put it in an envelope immediately. Might be a tough search, you could try a watchmaker, jeweler, but it may be too large. Probably too small for a gun shop. Really need to find a music repair shop that has been in business a long time and has a "junk" drawer. Hardware stores don't have anything that small. Lot of people selling parts on eBay, but you probably would need to buy the entire tuner or contact the seller if it looks like they have a large repair department. Good luck, probably only cost you a nickel, once you find one, but it may take years.....good luck!

I'm going to hazard a guess that you're not going to find too many guitar tuners with the buttons held on by screws.

????? Grover, Schaller, Sperzel, Gotoh, Ping, etc. are all held on by screws. Many banjo tuners, as well. I've spent many, many hours with a bright light and a magnifying glass looking for a certain screw to repair a tuner. Not so much repair, but just get it up and running again!

OK, the Rotomatic style tuners and the like. I never think of those. Too many years looking at vintage guitars. Now I have to go looking at those.

All Parts carries them. I'm not real sure that will work.

If in fact the thread size in that message thread was correct Fastenal lists them here. The down side is that you probably have to buy a whole bunch. If there is a Fastenal anywhere near you take one of the screws there and see if they can size it for you to make sure you get the right one. You can also go to Roger Siminoff's site and contact them to see if they can provide Gotoh button screws in the right size.

The 2-56 screws that I bought ($7 for 100 on Amazon including shipping) were a little too thin and the threads were wrong. It could be that the 2-64 might work, but the shaft will still be thin.

I've got a Fastenal within 5 miles of me, so I'll take a sample and throw myself on their mercy and see what happens.

    Thanks!

Is this like the mandolin you have? Are these the little buggers you are talking about?

If so I can help. This photo is of my grandfather's mandolin, a 1976 Ibanez, that I now have (he's been gone a while). I restored the mandolin to playing condition (after many years of abuse and neglect) a few years back and when I did reluctantly replaced the tuners. I say 'reluctantly' because I wanted to keep as much of the instrument original as possible, but the tuners really did not function right so I changed them, however when I did I switched-out the buttons so at least I was still touching the same buttons Grandpa did. I kept the parts and thus I have extra screws I'd be happy to send to you.

Emzech: Outstanding! That is exactly right. Mine is a Model 524-CW (serial L768051), and the tuners appear to be an exact match, right down to the stamped filigree along the edges of the plates. I would be most grateful for two of the screws (one to replace my missing one, and one as a spare) if you'd care to send them. Is there anything I can swap in return? (You can be sure that I'll "pay it forward" in any case.)

P.S. Your grandfather's is in a whole lot better shape than mine! It looks gorgeous, and I hope you have a great time playing it.

I'm glad I can help, Alfred. I will mail you two little screws tomorrow. Look for an envelope from Ipswich, Massachusetts to arrive in a few days. All the best and those '70s Ibanez are great mandolins!

He wasn’t held on with screws, was he?

Actually I wouldn’t have panicked too much about a missing screw; my esteemed father-in-law is an engineer and I regularly plague him for bits for my Classic Cars: odd-sized screws, brackets etc which he runs up on his lathes and milling machines. As long as he has one to copy the rest is easy… well for me away…
But: it’s great to see the same spirit of generosity and hard-to-find parts swapping on this forum, the same as on my car forums… definitely makes me glad I found this site.

Alfred, three little screws (the two you asked for plus one for good luck) are now in the hands of the US Postal Service.

Everyone, the three little screws arrived today ahead of Snowmageddon. One is securely holding the tuning knob in its rightful place, and the other two are safely hidden away in the case as talismans against future loss. Thank you for your generous help, Jay.

If you have a chance do the community a favor and have the folks at Fastenal size one of those screws anyway.

Mike, I'll do that. I'm guessing that they are not a standard size, though possibly metric. I'll certainly report back on what I learn.
