Lauri Girourd does really cool non traditional (and great traditional) finishes. My personal favorite it the Greenie Dale Ludwig built.

Here's Red Diamond No. 137, in grey. Not quite black. Very cool. Click image for larger version.

For a time Weber was making their Aspen II in a brushed denim blue. It was so very cool.

I often feel the odd man out in my dislike of the traditional tobacco sunburst finish that everyone else seems to like. I love seeing non-traditional finishes/colors (though I do still love instruments in rich browns with ivory bindings too). Reds, blues, grays and greens with flamed maple look amazing as far as I'm concerned.

This was the year I had an infatuation with the colors of a traffic light......... All three of these are owned by the same person, he must have the traffic light infatuation as well.

Wow, you really don't see many solid color mandolins like this sea foam green. I actually dig it, looks like candy. I suppose this kind of finish would affect the tone? Still, so cool.

The non traditional color schemes are not to my taste. But then I'm old.

I like the non-traditional colors. Does that make me not-old?

Not a mandolin, but great basses built by George Furlanetto of Canada. Super cool guy and owner of 'F' bass... These are coined by George as 'ceruse' color...

The grain jumps out of the place, as you can see on this swamp ash. Interesting to see what maple does treated like this. I had an early F neck-through body and a black ceruse..miss 'em come to think of it...

I'm good with traditional colours/finishes--and good with non traditional ones as well.
None of my instruments really have non traditional finishes.
The closest is my AF95 guitar with transparent black--from some angles it looks very black--from others brown or other dark colours--but I can see the wood grain through it from some angles--and I like to see the grain.

I've considered buying guitars with non traditional finishes-but didn't for otehr reasons, such as price-and that would not stop me from buying a mando with that either
Would it save you a lot of time if I just gave up and went mad now?
