Default Recommendations Needed for Recorded Irish Mando Instrumentals

    Hi all,

I am making a video for my wife's family of their trip to Ireland a couple of years ago. I need two or three songs to use as background music. I'm looking for instrumentals, mandolin plus other instruments, and (of course) Irish. I'll need at least one up-tempo and one quiet, even melancholy, song.

I will be buying from iTunes, so please get specific in terms of the name of the tune, the artist, and the album it came on. I appreciate your suggestions!

    Rob

It's been a while since I checked out the MP3s here. My somewhat-fuzzy recollection is that there was a fair amount of original material and I don't recall seeing Irish music. But I will definitely check it out.

    Thank you!

I recommend checking out Butch Baldassari and John Mock's "Music of O'Carolan." Really beautiful record that I've listened to countless times.

Listen to the Marla Fibish/Jimmy Crowley CD "The Morning Dew" and either of Dan Beimborn's CDs (available from him; I don't know if they're on iTunes). Lovely mandolin versions of Irish tunes. Highly recommended.

Likewise!!! It's a really special album from start to finish.

On Tim O'Brien's album The Crossing, he has a nice instrumental version of his song "Ireland's Green Shore."

For a purely instrumental Irish album, I also like Mason Daring's soundtrack for The Secret of Roan Inish.

See if you can find some Sharon Shannon with her sister Mary on mandolin. The Diamond Mountain from Live In Galway maybe?

Simon Mayor's "New Celtic Mandolin" is my favourite of the genre. Also a +1 for Marla Fibish, and check out David Surrette, who's not strictly Irish but has some good Irish tracks.

Actually none of these are 'strictly Irish'. Great players - all of them- but one is English and two are American. I suppose it depends what you want. Ireland is awash with great traditional musicians, many of whom are really only known in their own areas, but mandolin isn't really one of the big instruments. If you want flute, fiddle or accordion then you'd have no problem finding stuff.
