Looks like Chris and the boys are putting out another album, slated for "early 2015". They posted a song as a preview. Are those drums I hear? Also, either some electric guitars or some electric-y effects going on.
Thanks,
Baron

Yeah, I wasn't too impressed with their new song..............maybe it will grow on me.
Punch goes Pop.

I've enjoyed the arc of development that their sound as a group has undertaken, but this new direction has a commercial feel to it that doesn't ring as authentic. What I mean is that their sound always came across as THEIR sound, this tune (acknowledging this is just one tune) sounds like a production piece.
made it through 50 seconds before i had to turn it off. . . blah
It doesn't seem like it's that far off from what he has been doing for years. I am a fan for sure but this doesn't really get me excited to buy it.

I'll be the first to admit that I'm a total Punch Brothers fan boy, but that was a little far in the pop direction for me. Not a bad song by any stretch, but far from what I expected from them. Maybe this tune will be the equivalent of the anomaly that Hayloft was from the new Nickel Creek album, and the rest will be back to the Who's Feeling Young Now sound.

Neat song in my opinion. I think this is the kinda thing that makes the Punch Brothers standout. Definitely not my favorite song of theirs but it makes me curious to what the rest is gonna sound like.
Mostly it's a pretty brave act by them. I gotta give them credit for that. Looking forward to the new release.
Remember bands: Don't play a crappy song as your album teaser.
Kind of sounds like a cross between a Ryan Adams wannabe and the Strawberry Alarm Clock. I liked it.

Well...... It's a fair bit to Poppy to suit my personal tastes. While I like PB's music over all I don't care for all their songs. So this is no surprise........ sound's a bit McCartney ish maybe....
I love hanging out with mandolin nerds . . . . . Thanks peeps ...
Something to consider. If there's something to be done with the mandolin, Thile's probably already done it and is now looking for something new to try. It's just the nature of very creative people. And at some point when you've mastered something, as he has the mandolin, it becomes more about the music than the instrument. It's a kind of freedom or opportunity most people will not realize because most won't ever make it there. And that's ok. I believe the same is true in many different disciplines.

What is Thile playing on this song- is it electric guitar, tenor or ?
That ain't the way Bill woulda played it!

Excellent song. I liked it a lot.
Very excited to have a new recording from the PB coming out. New Mission: To acquire concert tickets!

It's certainly a different direction for them. I think you'll often find that bands that have been together for a while are like a pendulum. If Punch was their most avant-garde undertaking, Antifogmatic and Who's Feeling Young Now fall somewhere in the middle, and this new album is their most commercial project, then I'm sure they will eventually swing back in the other direction. Plus anyone who's heard them live recently, has heard some new material that I'm sure will be included in the new record. That's the beauty of music: we can all find something that we like and the things we don't care that much for, we don't have to listen to
Ha, they left in a string squeak at the end. I like the music, but the lyrics seem vague and not strong in the verses. The chorus is pretty good. It think I am looking for more stressful, serious things to blow off. I mean, exactly what 21st century stress?
Just my personal take on it, and I'm probably way outside the age demographic this music is aimed at, and I'd have to hear the rest of the album to know how representative this is, but.... (is that enough disclaimers?)...
I don't think Chris Thile is an approachable enough song writer and singer, to move this far into generic pop instrumentation. I think what helped people appreciate Punch Brothers in the past, was the acoustic roots feel of the music. It was something to grab the ear, while inviting one to hang around long enough to appreciate Thile's quirky songwriting and tune writing.
It will be interesting to hear what the rest of the album is like.
A flash of Radiohead? Hmmmm I'm not sure either.

I think Thile is obviously an extremely talented mandolin player. But I just can't get into a single he does when it comes to song writing or singing. I just can't, and I do try.
And I am young (in my 20s) and open minded about music, I've listened to all kinds of stuff.
I honestly think I would rather see him just take a sideman role in other projects. Like Sam Bush. In fact it's very similar to Sam Bush to me, I don't like Much of Sam's solo stuff, his best work is as a sideman, lending his talent to the music, but not leading the music. There's nothing shameful about that either, some people are just better in a supporting role.
Just my opinion
"When you learn an old time fiddle tune, you make a friend for life"
Reminds me somewhat of what Nickel Creek did on Why Should the Fire Die. We'll see what the rest sounds like.
