Default What Brand(s) of Mandolins did Chris Thile play before his Loars?

I'm sure this has been discussed in great detail somewhere, but I couldn't find it. Basically, what was Thile playing before he was famous or at least uber famous?

Well, an obvious one would be the Rigel CT(Chris Thile) - 110. Kinda strat in looks, but cooler, of course.

Leading Off and Stealing Second had him on newer (at the time) Gibson F-5s, which sounded terrific.

As far as I know, his first albums (which weren't at all bad, but a bit formulaic) were recorded with a 90's Gibson MM F-5. I didn't know about the Rigel, that looks like early 2000's, though. He also played a Flatiron Bouzouki on the This Side tour. Dudenbostels #5 and #14 around the same time, then the Loars.

He was playing on of Lynn's F5s at the time he got the Loar-signed F5, and went directly from Lynn's to the Loar-signed one. ...R

If you go back far enough, there might be some ultrasound footage of Chris plucking a tune or two on his own umbilical cord.

Thanks, Tom. Yes, I've seen the video of that. Sounds something like an diddley bow underwater......then, again, ya gotta love the "acoustics"!

He's played on camera on Edgar Meyers Collings mandolin on their Duets DVD for the house concert practice footage. I suspect hes's been handed and played on all sorts of mandolins as people present him with one or another to sign. But to my knowledge as far as a regular performing list, Marty has it as complete as I can recall.

the Homespun DVD of Chris teaching mandolin has him with a Dudenbostel. Its an excellent DVD for learning, and just to sit and watch..............and be amazed, the Dud mando sounds excellent to my ears.

He looks like he is 17 years old in the DVD-have no idea how old he was when it filmed.

He sounded better with the dudenbostel and the mm f5 vs the loars. They dont fit his style in my opinion.

I believe Chris started playing Dude #5 in the latter part of '98. I've seen photos from '98 where he is playing a Gibson and then in '99 he was definitely playing the Dude. When I first saw him in Aug '98 I was not a mandolin player (yet!) and have no idea what he was playing.

    Marty,

With all due respect, I don't think it could have been a Gibson Master Model in the 90s as the model was not introduced until 1999?

That would have been an F-5L, Gibson F-5 Custom, or the Bill Monroe model, no?

Does Chris still have the "Dudes" or does somebody else have them now?

It seems if I remember right in some videos he plays a Dearstone, also after just seeing and hearing him play close up with both Mike Marshall and Edgar Meyer that Loar is sounding mighty fine.

I seem to recall that he sold Dude #5 in order to fund the purchase of his first Loar, missed it, and later bought it back when the opportunity arose.

That is interesting, because here is a MM from our own carleshicks Master Model list:
V-70317 November 2, 2001 Derrington one piece back (Formerly owned by Chris Thile)

So why did Chris get a Master Model if he was already playing his Dude?

Interesting side note (to me anyway) I own a MM only 3 numbers away from the one mentioned above.

DataNick is also correct in post 17. In the '90s, Chris played a '90s F5, I believe, Custom.

My understanding was that #5 was on loan from Lynn until Chris' commissioned #14 was completed. Then he returned #5 which was sold to another party. But then later down the road Chris was able to reacquire #5, which he preferred to #14. I don't think these particular transactions had anything to do with the Loar acquisition.
