Thread: Non-adjustable Tailpiece Height

I have just noticed a fair amount of string buzzing on my elderly 1916 Gibson F4. On close examination I noticed that some strings are 'leaving' the tailpiece without any contact with or support from tailpiece base. With the G strings being relatively thicker, they are making contact and they do not buzz at all. I am a bit reluctant, but I am intending to 'bend' the tailpiece up a little on the next string change, to the point where all strings are making contact with the base. I am also planning on sticking a piece of felt or leather on the appropriate edge to provide some string cushioning. Could anyone give me some advice on this? Thanks and best regards.

One common trick is to lay a thin piece of leather inside the tailpiece under the strings and just before they leave the tailpiece. This stops the buzzing. I have used pieces of suede, a length of thinner shoelace leather and pieces of Elk or Deerhide strips.

    What Keith said.
If you bend the tailpiece up, the string tension will probably pull it right back where it was anyway.
