Friends, Has anyone tried to arrange any J. Tull songs for Mandolin? It seems like some of their tunes would sound cool on mandolin. Thanks, Haden

Dave Pegg -- Tull's bassist through the 80s and much of the 90s -- has arranged and recorded "Life's a Long Song" twice, each time with prominent mandolin part: on Fairport Convention's 1997 album "Who Knows Where The Time Goes?" (Link) and, more stripped down and arguably better, for a limited-release Tull tribute album (Link).

Am sure someone has advised: listening to Tul songs, you will find quite a few with mandolin as the main instrument.
Have fun!

Did not know about the "Life's a long song" recording, though I have been tempted to do that on mandolin!

Most Folk Rock bands have used a mandolin every now and then as a folksy ingredient to spice up their "Folk" side. One of the better and and in fact most persistent examples is this one from Steeleye Span.

Aqualung got my most Tull play, by far. Was there any mando on that?

Ian Anderson is a mandolin player, he refers to the mandolin as his "other girlie instrument." I listened to a lot of Jethro Tull years ago, still have most of their albums up through the early 90's.
I sometimes do a "train song gone wrong medley" starting with Freight Train Boogie by Merle Travis in A, then morphing into Locomotive Breath in Am. Sounds cool on OM.
Cool! Thanks, Eddie, Martin, et al. Some of the other songs I had in mind include: Mother Goose, Up to Me and, maybe, Thick as a Brick.

That was a highlight for me, Jim. Good Times...
Some times ago I tabed out Cheap Day Return... But I never played it (I'm too lazy). Here's the tab i've done...

I have played locomotive breath rather frequently at song circles, as one fellow there is a Tull fan, and, it works quite nicely, and improv break with a simple blues scale is easy.
Rather more difficult is look into the sun, as it seems to be often played rubato, and takes a good deal of timing and practice to get right, for me at least.
I've started work on "Thick as a Brick." Seems like it should adapt well to mandolin, but so far I'm in the early stages.
There are lots of other Tull songs that I think would sound good on Mandolin, including "Up to Me" and "Mother Goose."

Never arranged, but I know they have some mandolin in the work and it is stunning. At present I am working and tinkering with "Life's a long song".

Tull is a favorite of mine as well. Will have to listen more carefully and try some on mando, silly not to have thought of it seriously before.

The trio I'm with does versions of "Mother Goose" and "Reason for Waiting".
On the CD "Living with the Past" there is backstage versions of "Mother Goose", "Fat Man" and "A Christmas Song" where Ian A. states that Dave Pegg is playing mandolin.
