    Default Mandolin Album Thread

I always love a good mandolin centric album, so i thought it might be nice to have a place where everyone can list a good album they've listened to recently. I think it might be a good idea to stick to newer albums, but its all good.

im also not a music critique, just sharing what i like

    Velocipede- Self titled

-------I included this one because its probably not well known even though the mandolinist, Baron Collins-Hill is a member here. Baron has some super tight and imaginative rhythm playing in this album. Nice to hear how the mandolin can thrive in a rhythm role outside of the standard chop chords. It has a wide range of different fiddle tunes from different traditions. My favorite is "The Quail is a pretty bird" They also play in a fairly straight forward fashion with less ornaments, so this is a really good album to listen and learn tunes from.

    Adam Steffey- New Primitive

-------Ive really been wearing this one out, really high energy album and i just love the old time/bluegrass blend that alot of people seem to be putting out these days. I guess Adam is playing Northfields now? Whatever hes playing i just love the tone hes getting. My favorite tunes are the ones with just mandolin and old time banjo like "Johnny Dont Get Drunk" and "Rock the Cradle Joe"

Anyway, just thought this would be a good way to discover some new albums to buy, and remember guys..

    BUY! DONT ILLEGALLY DOWNLOAD!

I over think these things. Here is a list of the albums I am listening to that feature the mandolin. What I like about them all is that they are music first, and mandolin music second. You don't need to be a mando-nerd to love and enjoy this, being a mando-nerd is of no advantage in appreciating these as much as any music lover. I am going to guess that they probably have a wider audience among those unfamiliar with the mandolin.

They inspire me, but in a general way. I am not inspired to try to play any of it, or inspired to listen to more mandolin necessarily.

A second thing that links these albums in my mind is that they reward careful listening, and yet can be used as background music for the days activities. Lean forward or lean back, in either case its wonderful.

Avi Avital Bach - Duetsch Grammophon

Concerti per Mandolino - Avi-Avital - La Bottega Discantica

Nutcracker Suite - Modern Mandolin Quartet - Dorian

Mozart for mandolin and guitar - Detlef Tewes & Boris Bjorn Bagger - ANTES

Johann Sebastian Bach for mandolin and guitar - Dorina Frati & Piera Dadomo - DYNAMIC

Cantabile - duets for mandolin and guitar - Butch Baldassari - John Mock - Soundart Recordings

The Mandolin in the 18th Century - Marilynn Mair - QORQ

Music for Mandolin - Alison Stephens, Sue Mossop, Poppy Holden, Richard Burnett - AMON RA

The new Greensky Bluegrass record "If Sorrows Swim" was issued Tueday. A phenomenal mix of roots and exploration, all wrapped-up in well-crafted songs. Paul Hoffman continues to be one of my favorite players, and to my ears, one of the worlds most delicious sounds come from Anders Beck's dobro.

Some of the tracks are familiar, as they've made their way into the live set since their last record. I've played the whole thing easily 20 times so far this week. Highly recommended!

Don Julin and Billy Strings Rock of Ages is a great mandocentric album.

Grass that includes mando that I have been digging is:
The Lil Smokies- They are a newgrass outfit out of Montana- similar to Greensky Bluegrass- great studio album.
Steep Canyon Rangers- Deep in the Shade and Tell the Ones I Love are great. Love their mando players sound- modern Monroe style- great stuff.

Fred Geiger did a self-titled album in 1978, which included mandolinist, Akira Otsuka. The entire album is great, but Akira's mandolin is spectacular. Shiek of Araby and Ain't Misbehavin' are fantastic. I used to have this on tape but can't find it. It IS a memorable project. Anyone know if it's available on CD?
