ID:	121942there is a round back cittern on ebay, they call a liuto cantibele. looks really cool except for a bad crack on the top. does anyone recognize the maker?

I have a plainer cousin which I will try to post pictures of.

are there any others with these instruments?

    couldn't get a picture to post--any hints?

Liuto Cantabiles (also called liuto moderno) are usually 5 course mandocelli and have a long scale. For some reason this one looks like it might be more of a European-style mandola tuned to one octave below a mandolin with a low C and a scale similar to mandola. Do you know what the scale length is on this one? The proportions look wrong to me for a true liuto.

i did get pictures to load, now i just need to show the one now on ebay. mine has the scale of a guitar and i have it tuned dadad, sort of dadgad on guitar but it is not high tension. i have thought of lightening the strings and tuning up to gadag or something like that. the big big big sound board does create a great sound. it used to have perfect action but i wife put it in a sunlit window while i was away and although i have fixed it, the action has never been quite as good.. source of a lot of matitial tension.

it has lovely over tones for jigs and reels and a few songs. very resonant and woody at the same time.
one lutheir thought mine was austrian or northern italian, another thought made in the usa, no labels or signs. maple back and sides.

this was a eaby find. it was $450 including tax and exchange. plus i tossed my brother fifty bucks for picking it up for me

how do you upload an e bay listing??

it's a 23 inch scale from zero fret to saddle, the body is 19 inches long and hair under 13 inches wide.

OK... it just looked smaller in the photos but that scale is prob right for a liuto cantabile.

Can you post the link please! I can not find it on ebay. Looks like a German "Vogtlandperle".

I don't know how to post an ebay page. but it's under liuto cantibele, and it's in Minnesota or wisconson.

mine sounds great for celtic, and folk. the body is so big it does look like a mandola until you get the measurements or see it in person.

does anyone know what kind of music was played traditionally on the liuto cantibele? Sicilian folk?

Vogtlandperle or Vogtlandsperle was a trademark of Kurt Gropp (1901-1979), a musical instrument manufacturer and distributor.

Here you can see a few examples of his instruments (waldzithers) with pictures and descriptions from a catalogue from 1930:

A page with more information (German, Iīm sorry) and interesting pictures (e.g. the shop with many instruments) you can find here:

Easy-peasy. Copy the URL you want to link, hit the li'l blue ball in the bar below the "Quick Reply" heading, paste the URL over the "http//:" that shows up in the box, and you've done it.

What I do is to first type something like this, underlined and bolded, then highlight it with the mouse, then click on the "Link" blue ball and paste in the URL. That way the link shows up as the word "this," rather than the entire URL -- which in the case of eBay, goes on nearly forever.

They really look similar. But there are differences, too, e.g. the fretboard. Is there a special mark thatīs typical for a "Vogtlandperle" mandocello?

    @Holger: Nice instrument!
    Sounds great?

i don't think mine has a mark of any kind. possibly a copy of the vogtlandpele by an unknown or small maker. sounds great is the main thing, with that big sound board of german spruce it is a loud as a guitar or better and lots of over tones and twang.

I really like the look of the one on ebay but ya can't own everything and he says he may not ship to Canada. I just blew the bulk of my "mad money" on a rare wire strung gaelic harp by jay witcher. there's a 1956 Gibson southern jumbo for sale locally but I am more of a harp guy these days.
