Default Austin week of July 26?

I'm tagging along with my hub on a business trip, and I will be in Austin July 26-31. (Actually, I'm driving him, so I'll have a car and we can meander through north Texas a bit.) I'll be free during the day, and hub wants to see things in the evening, too.

What's going on that week? What do I need to see? Music first, food second, bats third... I know a trip to Fiddler's Green; is it possible to get tours at Ellis or Collings? I know I am not up to the point of jams yet (still on scales) but I would love to listen to one...

    Help?

Collings has shop tours on most Fridays. Check out http://www.collingsguitars.com/Tour/entrance.html.

You can contact Tom Ellis directly through the Cafe (he is Ellisppi) and ask him about visiting his shop.

The Austin Mandolin Orchestra rehearses on Wednesday nights at 7:00 p.m. in the "Barn" behind Fiddler's Green. We always welcome visitors, to sit in or just listen.

Question Re: Austin week of July 26?

Our favorite restaurant is Asti, an unpretentious place turning out excellent creative Italian fare. It's about 10 minutes from Fiddler's Green. Reservations on Open Table.

You may also want to stop by Hill Country Guitars, particularly if you are interested in guitars as well as mandos. They are one of the largest Collings dealers in the country and the new store near the UT campus is a great place to hang out.

For music, check out The Continental Club, Cactus Cafe and The Saxon Pub. Our favorite, though, is Strange Brew, a coffee/brew house with an outstanding adjacent performance space. They take the music very seriously, and customers respect the musicians and keep quiet during performances.

You should stay away from the tourist traps and dive bars on E. Sixth St - that scene has become very ugly in recent years.

    Enjoy Austin!

You should see if Paul Glasse is playing a gig while you are in Austin. Paul is a 'café member and a great mand'lin player.

Thanks, everybody! (Sorry - work is being very needy right now.) I will look at all of that, and Bob hasn't said no to the orchestra visit... LOL
