Ha! That's what I get for trying to be a funny man with a few old fashions in me. How about subliminally then.

I've played the same A for fifteen years but I think the F style mandolin is a thing of beauty.

Default biased towards f's? F-holes, or bodies with scroll? (or both?)

    define "F"s

There are teardrop mandolins with oval holes and there are teardrop mandolins with f-holes (like a violin has) such as an A-50.

There are "Florentine" mandolins (i.e. bodies with the scroll, and points) that have oval holes (F2 F4), and ones that have f-holes

(and there are more builders than just Gibson which has the claim to the "F" designation)

Everyone who's concerned about being a tiny bit bigger is all about the F. Because it's just a tiny bit bigger.

Yeah, sure is convenient. Not its intended purpose, I believe, but there it is.

Reminds me: There once was a small family with the last name Bigger - Papa Bigger, Mama Bigger, and Baby Bigger. Who was the biggest of them?

Nope, it was Baby, because it was just a little bigger.

I want an F but not just because the scroll is pretty. I also think the points help lap play. I just dont get "2 points" because they seem to be missing a point. Ya need that butt point on the thigh for traction. A three point I could understand, but whats the point of a 2 point ?

The regular F is pretty and thats reason enough for me. I do agree with everyone that a good sounding A style is easier to find than a good sounding F style at the same price point.

All the way with a symetrical A! I play seated, I've never used a strap, and I don't need an extraneous curlicue digging into my squishy bits. And I, too, have looked at the site banner and items and thought, "Well, I guess none of those are for me, wonder if I belong here."

Most cafe members are bluegrass devotees. Bill Who Cannot Be Criticised played an F from The Mandolin Company That Cannot Be Criticised. So it is logical that the accepted symbol must be an F.

I haven't heard anyone ever say it out loud, but does an A really count as a mandolin?

An alternative "A" style sticker would have been appreciated by many members though. For those folks, sporting an "F" sticker is a bit like driving a Chystler with an ad.for Ford on it !,

The sound is important, not the looks. So - should there be an audio version of the Cafe?

Phooey! Of course it counts. I count 4 courses with 2 strings tuned in 5ths. That's the math.

The almond shape with a round or oval hole is the original model, bowlback or flatback, AFAIK. Orville Gibson's F shape came later. Sure, it looks pretty and fancy, and has the strap-hanger, but is it the ONLY style? Nahhh ...

Yup, you sure do belong here, or I don't either. Based on past threads, this is true for a bunch of us. I love the elegant simplicity of the 'A' and am totally scroll-envy free! There ought to be a tee-shirt to this effect.

Amidst all of the joshing, we fail to address one critical factor. The graphic communication factor that completely justifies using an F-model emblem on hats and stickers.

No other shape definitively says 'mandolin'.

Because, deep down, everyone wants an F. Otherwise, why would those A-owners keep searching for validation that an "A is just as good as an F?"
