    Default Silverangel #345

Here's the latest off my bench. Redwood top and the back has a nice story to it. I was driving by a body shop ,about 30 years ago and the curl of this wood hit me from the distance. I rushed over and offered him a nice piece of oak for every piece of that maple. Of course he was delighted since maple makes sorry firewood. I said not to burn another chunk, I'll be back. I have a few of them left still.Click image for larger version.

That's another fine looking mandolin, Ken. How's your hand healing up?

My hand looks pretty bad, but I have hardly no trouble at all building, it's the playing I have trouble with. Pretty frustrating to build a mandolin and then only can play simple things, but I can tell if it's a good one or not.

I have yet to see anything from your shop that doesn't impress! Beautiful instrument, Ken.

Very beautiful. I'm a big fan of redwood and cedar. How would you describe the tone? Gonna post a sound file?

I would say this one has alot of clarity with ample bass response. I need to post a sound clip, but I'm ignorant with that stuff and besides, since I cut my fingers off my left hand, I can't play much. Where you at Donnie? But, I think the tone is very clear and plays easy. It seems redwood lends itself well to the tone I've tried for all my life. It's unlike all the other woods I've used, although they all have their qualities and depending on building techniques, good bass response, just seems that redwood is easier to do this.

I'm very sorry you cut your fingers off. I know 4 woodworkers that has happened to. In my line of work I'm terrified every time I step up to a machine so it really has a big impact on me.

I listened to the vids that were posted a while back of the two A models you made and I think they were either cedar or redwood. I love that sound.

I'm not tied to the F5, I just look for "that" sound that's not what a typical Loar sounds like. Right now my main mandolin has become what I originally bought because it has that other sound and was supposed to be my spare/travel mandolin. Cedar top, and mahogany back and sides A model. My F5 now sits. More and more I'm drifting away from the spruce/maple and prefer the cedar/redwood mellower sound.

I had the pleasure of playing this mandolin and I can tell you that whoever takes this one home is gonna be VERY happy!
