Here's a few shots of Elkhorn F-5 #40 ready for finishing. Really excited about the woods on this particular mandolin. The combination of Big leaf Maple and Red Spruce on this one sounds incredible! Enjoy.

That's yet another incredible looking mandolin Robb. If i were in a position to buy it,i'd be asking for it to be left in as natural a colour as you could get. It looks astounding just as it is !!!,

From Robb - " I absolutely love doing this stuff ...". Not in Cocobolo you don't !. The next time somebody asks you to build one of those, get fitted up with a scuba diving wet suit & Oxy.tanks - the flippers would be optional of course !,

Hey Ivan, I know I said I was shying away from building Cocobolo mandolins. However, I never said anything about a Cocobolo guitar! This is Mexican Cocobolo, not near as harsh as the Nicaraguan stuff!

Beautiful work as always Robb. By the way, I have a nice pair of flippers that are easy to walk in.

From above - "can anyone float me a loan??!!" . Make that two !.
Robb - That guitar is a gem !.Like Skip,i like the peghead as well. Sheer, understated, beautiful simplicity - definitely a ''less is a whole lot more'' case. That's why my favourite mandolin fingerboard inlay is 'none'. For me, the 'dots' detract from the look. A bit like putting white buttons on a black Tuxedo. ( I really must remember to take 'em off ! ),

Thanks guys! Both of the mandolins at Carter's are really good! Surprised that either one of them is still available. They will both make someone very happy in their respective new homes. On the guitar; it really has been fun building this one; the woods are so sweet!! And.. the sound of this thing is killer. I'll post a sound clip when it's completed.

    Robb,

What kind of tuners are on that impressive looking F5?

Waverly machines with ebony buttons. I really do like using the Waverly's! Not cheap but they do a great job and they look great!

Do you notice a significant difference between Waverly tuners vs the Grover 309 series?

Honestly, it's been so long since I've used anything other than Waverly's I really couldn't give you an honest opinion on the Grover's. I'm sure they're good tuners as they are used a lot and folks and they seem to get along with them just fine. I just prefer the operation and aesthetics of the Waverly's.
