    Default Feb. 18 Loar

There is a Feb. 18, 1924 Loar in the classifed.

I have a habit of reading old Frets magazines. I just happened to be looking at the December, 1988 issue this weekend. In the classified:

"Gibson F-5 Lloyd Loar signed Feb. 18, 1924. Excellent original condition. 2nd owner. Set up by Monteleone. Beautiful sound. $15,000."

How many Feb. 18 Loars are there?

Oh, those old FRETS, Mandolin World News ads are heart-breakers:

    '29 Fern for 5k
    Monteleone F-5 for $1,800

How about those of us that were buying and selling at those prices and happy to make that $500 profit

I remember that time. That price was still out of reach for me at that time.

I used this Inflation Calculator and here is what I got:
What cost $15000 in 1988 would cost $29094.62 in 2013.
Hmmmm... that means that a Loar increased much more than any average item and would have been a very good investment. Who knew back then??

I looked at a nice Loar prob back about 1985 but even checking my life savings could not find anywhere nearly enough money to offer for it. I think they were about $10-12K back then. Where is Mr. Wells' time machine when we need it?

I spoke to a gentleman yesterday to whom I sold TWO Loars to in the mid '80's. He still has them. He couldn't decide between the two I had for sale and just bought them both.
