Those were great! I always love seeing the professional players noodle around on these instruments and give their opinions on the sound/playability.

In the first video (of the Gilchrist Model 5), what was he doing there when he talked about it being pitched at C# instead of E or Eb like the others? He seemed to be hunting for just the right pitch, and I could hear a thunkiness when he found it on the G strings. Is this some way of checking the natural frequency of the soundboard?

That's my assumption as well. The inherent tone of the instrument.

What a great collection of examinations these videos are!

Any more theories on that fundamental tone thing? Did the guy he was talking to understand or just going along so as not to feel stupid.... That's what I would have done. "Ya, it's a C...amazing...I was just thinking the same thing..."
Cool videos though. That second '27 fern?...I want that..

In my book, Thile nailed it (in the Feb. 18th video), when he described the modern DJ sound like a smiley, loud highs and lows but the middle scooped out, very general, of course, but I can refer to it. And I think it's true for a lot of bluegrass recordings and instruments. Anyhow, super musician with a good ear!

Off topic, I really like that shirt.

On topic, that mandocello is really nice. I would love to hear Chris play mandocello more. That's one of the things I love about Mike Marshall, he covers all the mando instruments. The mandocello needs more endorsements.

Well said kidgloves2...it would be cool to see Thile "branch out" a little (like how he just whips out the Bach cello suite on that mandocello)...but actually, remember, he did play fiddle on a track for Goat Rodeo...so that is rather impressive, holding his own with Stuart Duncan....I mean it's tuned the same and all....but as someone who dabbles in fiddle....it's definitely a whole new world. And yes, I'm a huge Mike Marshall fan and love the fact he does cover the whole gamut of mandolin family instruments. And let's not forget the one who I consider to be "the" proponent of the octave mandolin: Sarah Jarosz.

TT, Much as I admire Sarah J & her music & musical companions.....I think both both Tim OBrien and Ben Winship have done a whole bunch more with the octave mandolin. Just my opinion

yeah, in retrospect I thought I should have thrown in Tim O'Brien into that statement : )
I don't know the other, but will look him up...thanks for the tip.
Sarah has been getting a lot of exposure as of late so that's why I cited her specifically.

    Hey doc,
Very, very cool. I think we'd hang out if we lived in the same time zone! : )
He is an engineer/producer as am I. (but I specialize in orchestral and choral music)
I really like his website...personal yet professional...that's my goal as well.
Oh, and I guess I should listen to him play too!

Right after Nickel Creek rolled through Nashville and these videos were made, that Gilchrist F5c was marked as sold on Carter's website. I wonder if he bought it. I actually preferred the tone (that I could hear through my computer speakers) of the Gil. Much more rounded on the highs, smoother than the Gibsons. I like that soft smooth tone.

Marketing genius. I wonder if Carter pays anything for the videos. I guess its probably just such a cool store they just ask and different musician celebs are happy to demo the high end stuff. Great sales strategy though. And for once a commercial I am happy to watch over and over again.
No matter where I go, there I am...Unless I'm running a little late.
