made out of buffalo horn and supplied by Clifford Essex for the grand sum of £1.50, same again for P & P.

I opened mine today, it's about 4cm long and 1.5 wide and a bit under 1mm thick.

I have had a quick try and quite like it, my current favorite pick is the black Gibson heavy in the photo and I guess this is no 2 at the moment.

The edges are a bit sharp so I might try chamfering and rounding them as it's a bit 'grabby' on the lighter strings, but I can get a lot more volume control out of it than I can the Gibson.

It looks a little wide to my eyes. Usually the Ranieri/Roman picks are thicker in the middle and taper to the edges. I have std bull horn picks and they are sort of mushy sounding to my ears. I don't know if there are differences in buffalo horn.

If you like it, tho, that is great and the price certainly is reasonable.

I've tried the Clayton horn pick, sounded too clicky to me.

I buy these and re-shape them to my style. It's a great material.

Under 1mm thick seems very thin for a Ranieri style, and possibly too flexible as well (but I don't know about buffalo horn). Still, I like them much thicker; at least 2mm so I can taper them with a gradual bevel, and they don't flex at all. But that's me.

I found that the horn picks were just too soft for me and wore out fast. YMMV.

I agree with bratsche that they should be thicker. I made my Roman picks from ultem plastic and other than that verboten organic substance, it works pretty well. The thicker stiff is the hardest but I really need to set up my belt sander and can prob do a better job with those.
