    Default New Flat-Top

Got a new flat-top made by a luthier in Kentucky, Brian Burgess. Brian has been making guitars for a while, but has branched out into mandolins. I got #7 made. It has a cedar top with walnut elsewhere. What got my attention was the unique look of each, the wood grain and color coming through. The sound was also surprising (made a brief sample at http://snd.sc/1dG2wWx). I put a McClung armrest which was destined for a different flat-top on it. Haven't been able to put it down all day.

The inventory is always in some flux, but that's part of the fun.

The top is flatsawn and is not the typical western red cedar.
I hope you have many enjoyable years playing it.

You mean flat sawn as opposed to quarter sawn?

Yes Jeff and it appears to be aromatic cedar (actually one of the junipers).

There's something "comfortable" and casual about this mandolin. It sounds decent and soft/smooth to play. It definitely is a keeper.

Please let me know how yours turned out. I did put a McClung armrest and a strap on mine. Got a tail button off EBay to attach the strap to that fit one of the tailpiece holes perfectly. It's still going strong.
