Default Gibson A-40, A-50 back brace question

Have a question as to why there is a back brace on those model of Gibsons.
Are the backs on those mandolins an induced arch?
    Thanks

The A 40 has laminated mahogany back and sides so my guess would be it probably has an induced arch. Certainly not carved. I can see that the back brace was considered a necessity. The A 50 had several different versions in its lifespan but I believe they all had solid maple bodies. The tops were carved spruce but not sure if the backs were carved or not. That back brace could be a clue. I wish f5loar would chime in. He would know for certain.

No back brace in 1942 A-50.

You might get more responses if you ask for this post to be moved to "Looking For Information About Mandolins". If you ask the site owner or moderators I'm sure they would be happy to do that for you.

    Thank you Don,
I waffled back and forth where to post question, see how it goes today and maybe see about getting it moved.
