Thread: Solidbody elecric mandocello - string sets?

Default Solidbody elecric mandocello - string sets?

I know D'Addario and some other companies are offering string sets for acoustic mandocellos, but who is offering any nickel steel sets for solidbody mandocellos?

I recently converted a cheap Washburn guitar into a mandocello, and buying 8 single strings is pretty darn pricey. My music store suggested buying 2 sets of 8 string guitars sets, but then I would have 8 strings leftover.... not a good idea.

Anyone have some better ideas? Thanks!

What is the scale length of your solidbody electric mandocello?

25 1/2, same as a Stratocaster. It has a hardtail bridge modded for 4 bridge saddles from 6, so I added a tailpiece instead of drilling new holes all the way through the body.

    Here's a pic.

    Ball-end mandocello sets at emando.com
Yes. I know. No need to PM me, too.

If you check my 1st post, Jacob fits into this category: "some other companies".
I am aware of the strings he sells.
Jacob did not answer my question.
Instead, he tried to sell me his stuff... twice (it might be great - I don't know).

SOoooo.... back to my first post.
I asked if anyone has any better ideas (than those I've found already).
    Thanks, Bernie.

Have you explored the option of buying single steel strings in bulk from Ernie Ball or D'Addario?

Buying single strings for a mandocello would mean buying 8 wound strings I suppose -- what $24 -25 a set? So the option of buying two sets of guitar strings would be cheaper and you might be able to periodically sell off the extra strings to off set your losses?

That said a set of J78's for an acoustic mandocello will set you back $11-13 - and there several more expensive sets out there. For example Thomastik-Infeld mandocello sets (acoustic) are much more expensive.

If you search around in the old threads here in this CBOM section there was a string about a year ago about another guy who made an electric mandocello -- from scratch. That was a very long thread (many posts) and at one point it turned to steel strings for the mandocello -- you might try to dig that one up?

But you can probably count the number of electric mandocellos without taking your shoes off so finding strings sets other than the emando sets it will be a challenge for sure.

Well, I guess you've already decided not to be my customer, so if what I'm about to say offends you, at least I haven't lost any potential business. But let me try to clear up a couple of things:

    1) Jacob is not me and I am not Jacob. I run Emando.com and he doesn't. I sent you a PM because Cafe policy prohibits use of the message board for direct sales. Jacob posted a link to my site, of his own accord, in an effort to help you out. So kindly get off Jacob's back.

    2) Emando.com does indeed sell nickel-steel mandocello sets for electric mandocellos, as well as phosophor bronze mandocello sets for acoustic mandocellos. That was what your original post asked about. So I don't see how Jacob's reply failed to answer your question.
Emando.com: More than you wanted to know about electric mandolins.

No, not that -- just some confusion!

Try a set of those emando cello strings they'll get the job done!

Just ordered 2 sets from you - 1 for the solidbody electric conversion, and 1 for the archtop electric I'm about to purchase (and convert).
    Hope I like them.

Put a new set on my solidbody conversion today after I changed out the pickups and modded the bridge and tailpiece again (for more breakover angle). They sound great - nice and rumbly!
