Thread: Just have to brag!

    Default Just have to brag!

Hi All. I've been lurking here, but am not one to post much (1st one!). In any event, I just picked up my first mandolin tonight. It is an Eastman 515. Got a good deal on it so I'm pretty pumped about it. I played violin and fiddle years ago, but have wanted to pickup the mandolin for years and now it's time! Keep up the great posts, I'll keep reading and start picking!

Current Stable: Two Tenor Guitars (Martin 515, Blueridge BR-40T), a Tenor Banjo (Deering GoodTime 17-Fret), a Mandolin (Burgess #7). two Banjo-Ukes and five Ukuleles..

The inventory is always in some flux, but that's part of the fun.

What, exactly, are you bragging about? Getting a good deal?

Congratulations, MTO … I remember how proud I was when I got my first mandolin. I still have it!

Seriously … this is this person's first post and you're trying to start a tussle? I'd recommend moving along, sir or madam. I'm glad there's an "ignore" button at the cafe and that I know how to use it.

Very good! It's great to get that first mandolin, and love it! I have an entry level Washburn that I set up myself, and I really love my mando....learning lots of old-time fiddle tunes. Stay pumped!!

    congrats!
I too just recently found my first mandolin. I play a few other instruments and love them all, but there is something very special and engaging about the mandolin.

Not trying to "start" anything. My thought on reading this thread was that it was an odd use of the word "brag" and expressed that thought. Unfortunately, there are people such as yourself who have rigid boundaries of what is "acceptable" comment. Anything that sounds as if if may, possibly, on some level be construed as negative should not be expressed. In this case, the only response you deem proper is something along the lines of "attaboy, keep at it, congratulations, way to go". There's nothing wrong with being a cheering society if that's what you want to do. But it isn't right to demand everyone on a public site taylor their responses to fit your vision of what is acceptable. Diversity in opinion is what makes a discussion healthy, not a bunch of people parroting the same thought over and over. Nothing nasty was said, no one was insulted.....you might examine your own motivation for posting such a comment.

It is true that out of some misguided sense of politeness, many members overlook spelling errors and malapropisms in posts, and instead focus on the spirit and intention of the post rather than getting sidelined by these things. But it is just a slippery slope people, and if members of the diction police, like mandolirius, don't take a stand, it will be anarchy.

It's true, words are our means of communication and the responsibility of that falls to the communicator not the one on the receiving end of the message, to paraphrase a comment by your president, Ronald Reagan.
Many posters also don't know the difference between "then" and "than"

    Don't agree. If you speak a language I don't know , where's the communication?

I have a feeling you will enjoy your new mandolin more than reading whatever people post on the Internet.
