Thread: Value of Ricky Skaggs Signed Mandolin

  1. #1

Default Value of Ricky Skaggs Signed Mandolin

I recently went to see Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder and after the show there was a signing where Mr. Skaggs signed my Morgan Monroe MMS-8. I am curious as to its value now. I understand the true value depends on my factors but I am just looking for an estimate. Thanks

    P.S. The show was fantastic!

Less than you paid for it. Skaggs' signature doesn't add any value to it.

I would suspect it hasn't increased the value of your mando but, you do have a nice memento of the performance.

I'd say a little less than if he hadn't defaced it, but that's just me; it is the market that decides value.

Trouble is Ricky doesn't or never has, played that model of mandolin. I can't see how an autograph colector would want the instrument and someone who anted the instrument might not be too interested in having the back in k on it. I imagine the greatest value it has is reminding you of your meeting with a musical hero which is probably worth more than the dollars.

It's worth about what anyone would pay for an MMS-8 that has a signature on it, doesn't really matter who signed it.

Just to give you a little perspective, here's Ricky's signature on a piece of commemorative memorabilia sitting with a Buy it now price of $4.99 on eBay. If you're looking to add value to an instrument it's probably better to just keep it in nice shape.

Bear in mind, though, that it may rise a lot in value should Mr Skaggs ever become famous.

Wow, didn't realize he had that many haters. Maybe because I paid to see him instead of some of you! Thanks to those that weren't condescending, or disrespectful (namely George and Darren)!

People answered your question, they just did not do it explicitly. They poked fun a little bit. Nobody said anything bad about Skaggs, just that his signature on your mandolin did not increase its value, but rather possibly decreased it because his signature is not worth anything and it makes your instrument in slightly worse condition. Welcome to the internet.

He doesn't. Nor does his signature make a mandolin more valuable to most folks.
You did ask that, right? That mandolin and his signature will be a reminder TO YOU how great the show was. That's value enough. I have a Stephane Grappelli autographed photo.....same deal.....very valuable to me, but not necessarily in a monetary sense.

I didn't read anything that would indicate RS haters ! Nor disrespectful or condescending. I enjoyed your thread which was different than most but everyone gave you a respectful honest answer.

Hey, I've paid to see him more than once. Had great times every show! You now have a fun piece of personal history. You will remember that show the rest of your life. So there's no great increase of value, big deal, you had a good time right?

It's a joke. I am of course a huge Skaggs fan, and own many of his albums.

I'm going to start my own Internet, where everybody gets it.

    What he said +.
I'm a big fan of Skaggs. I think he's done a lot in his career to re-focus the spotlight on Bill Monroe. He's brought at least an awareness of the mandolin to the masses, and from what I've heard, I think he's a relatively classy human being.
Your mandolin is still your mandolin and you can cherish it all the more now.
Sadly though, it will probably never rise to the same lofty heights of value as the famous Duane Eddy Gibson.

It may very well one day be worth much more after Mr. Skaggs stops making public appearances.

Look how much Bill Monroe's signature added to the value of this Morris mandolin, that got no bids and didn't sell, on eBay:

Many years ago my wife and I were waiting for our car to be repaired at a dealership, when Robert Parrish walked in. He was getting his car fixed too. My wife said "wow, should I get his autograph?" I replied, "why, what for? what would you do with it?" She said, "oh . . . yeah."

That could also be a problem with an over-ambitious starting price, but I get your point.

I am glad that I posted this to get a true sense of this community. I was not whining, merely wondering why my mandolin was "defaced" or "worth less" to quote some. If these aren't (to be put kindly) "less helpful" comments, than I must be on the wrong site. I do however appreciate those who kindly stated that there wasn't a change in value. I just may delete my profile, which is truly sad as I have only been playing for a month!
