Definitely a lot of self-proclaimed experts around here who talk big but have never demontrated they can play anything.

So: can you enlighten me as to exactly how accomplished a mandolin player one has to be, in order to have an opinion, say, on Ms. Applegate's proficiency?

Slightly defensive on the subject, since I feel I probably am an average picker -- certainly not as good as many others on the CafeŽ. Yet I flatter myself that I make a positive contribution to the discussions here. If a demonstration of exceptional musical skill is required, in order to legitimize my comments, I'd better start "pulling in my horns!"

There is a Collings in "A Mighty Wind" too, I believe.

Perhaps you should ask the person who Mandolirius quoted.

I think that all Scott was getting at is there at times is a bit of overly critical posting that goes on here at times.....(well in my opinion and sometimes I am in that camp).......just like this thread....hey it is nice that she at least knows some chords....knows the name of the instrument ....played it on national tv......and didn't make some snide comment about the "little guitar" or the ukelele she was playing.....

I think I will prove how much I don't care about this topic by posting on it in order to get the number of comments over SIXTY!

Yeah, that was a pleasant surprise to me that it was a nice Collings. It sounded nice strummed and it was in tune! Christina has excellent taste in mandolins and it seems to me that she has the potential to keep learning how to play; I hope she does not give it up

That was awesome - thanks so much for posting.

Always loved Christina. Great to see her back with a great sense of humor and wonderful stage presence. The years are being very kind to her IMHO.

I have tremendous respect for Christina Applegate. Having seen my brother survive cancer and in particular, cancer treatment, I know something of the fight she fought and won. Good for you Christina, it's all gravy from here on out!

By the way, she managed to overcome residual first impressions that MWC undoubtedly saddled her with, and has crafted quite a career.

As for her mandolin playing and vocals, I think the whole things cool. Bravo!
